H.C.R. No. 151
                              HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The death of Roy Walton Johnson of Henderson on
    1-2  December 2, 1992, at the age of 87, has brought a great loss to the
    1-3  many friends and relatives of this distinguished Texan; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, A native of Slocumb, Arkansas, Mr. Johnson lived
    1-5  most of his life in Rusk County, settling in the community in 1940
    1-6  during the development of the East Texas oil field; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, He was a valued employee of the Ohio Oil Company,
    1-8  which later became Marathon Oil, and was widely respected by his
    1-9  coworkers and supervisors for his hard work, dedication, and
   1-10  knowledge, and after more than 41 years of outstanding service
   1-11  retired from the company in 1966; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, A deeply patriotic individual, he volunteered for
   1-13  naval service during World War II even though he was past the draft
   1-14  age and working in an industry vital to the war effort; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, He will also be remembered as a man of strong
   1-16  religious convictions who contributed to the Lord's work in many
   1-17  ways; in 1946 he met with others in his home to organize the
   1-18  Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and with his wife, Jewell, and
   1-19  daughter, Johnnie, became one of the new church's charter members
   1-20  and served faithfully over the years as a deacon; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Benefiting from his thoughtful guidance, the
   1-22  congregation flourished and prospered and today includes almost 600
   1-23  members and is widely regarded as a leader in the work of the
   1-24  American Baptist Association; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson was instrumental in the church's efforts
    2-2  to establish the Texas Baptist Institute and Seminary; since its
    2-3  founding in 1948, the institute has trained countless ministers and
    2-4  has become a vital presence in Christian education; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, One of its original trustees, he served the seminary
    2-6  faithfully for 43 years until failing health caused him to resign
    2-7  in 1991; in recognition of his exceptional tenure, the Calvary
    2-8  Missionary Baptist Church elected him trustee emeritus; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, Throughout his life's endeavors, Mr. Johnson enjoyed
   2-10  the love and support of his wife of 60 years, Jewell Hendrix
   2-11  Johnson, who preceded him in death in 1985; and
   2-12        WHEREAS, A man of great vision, he devoted much of his life
   2-13  to serving his community, and though his presence will be deeply
   2-14  missed, his unique spirit will surely live on in the hearts and
   2-15  minds of the many people whose lives were touched by this
   2-16  exceptional gentleman; now, therefore, be it
   2-17        RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-18  hereby pay tribute to the life of Roy Walton Johnson and extend
   2-19  sincere sympathy to his daughters, Johnnie Johnson Smith of
   2-20  Marshall and Lois Johnson McCullar of Henderson, and to the other
   2-21  members of his family and his many friends; and, be it further
   2-22        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-23  prepared for the members of his family and that when the House of
   2-24  Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory
   2-25  of Roy Walton Johnson.
