By: Greenberg H.C.R. No. 156 73R11002 BNL-D CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The many friends and family of Frank L. Wright have 1-2 suffered a great loss with the passing of this esteemed gentleman 1-3 on May 7, 1993, at the age of 76; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born October 5, 1916, in Greeley, Colorado, 1-5 Mr. Wright was the son of a college professor, and his upbringing 1-6 in that academic environment instilled in him a love of learning 1-7 that shaped his life; and 1-8 WHEREAS, After beginning his education in Webster Groves, 1-9 Missouri, this distinguished scholar was graduated from Washington 1-10 University in St. Louis and received a master's degree from the 1-11 University of Cincinnati; yet even after attaining this high level 1-12 of achievement, Mr. Wright continued to devote his time and energy 1-13 to the pursuit of wisdom and experience, and he considered himself 1-14 to be a "learner of life"; and 1-15 WHEREAS, For more than three decades, Mr. Wright served as a 1-16 staff leader for Student YMCA, and his illustrious career included 1-17 tenures at that organization's branches at the University of 1-18 Cincinnati, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Washington 1-19 at Seattle, and finally The University of Texas at Austin, where he 1-20 served for 13 years; after leaving his position there, he embarked 1-21 on a five-year career with Investors Diversified Services, a 1-22 financial services company; and 1-23 WHEREAS, This accomplished gentleman then was able to combine 1-24 his financial planning acumen with his lifelong interest in 2-1 education as executive of the Texas Association of College Teachers 2-2 (TACT); in that role, Mr. Wright gained the respect and admiration 2-3 of many in the community for his enthusiastic work on behalf of 2-4 college instructors; and 2-5 WHEREAS, A tireless advocate for improved higher education, 2-6 Mr. Wright sought to help define the rights and responsibilities of 2-7 university faculty, to improve faculty governance around the state, 2-8 and to educate faculty members about their financial planning and 2-9 retirement options; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Mr. Wright brought this same level of intensity and 2-11 dedication to his volunteer work within the community, and he was 2-12 well known throughout Austin for his efforts combating such social 2-13 ills as homelessness and hunger, while struggling to obtain 2-14 affordable housing, health care, consumer protection, and justice 2-15 for all citizens; an active member of the Democratic Party, this 2-16 selfless individual also ministered to the needs of older persons 2-17 and assisted them with financial and estate planning; and 2-18 WHEREAS, Mr. Wright was fortunate to enjoy a warm and loving 2-19 relationship with his wife of many years, Marjorie; their marriage 2-20 was blessed with two daughters, Beverly and Jan, and in recent 2-21 years their devoted family grew to include four granddaughters, who 2-22 were a constant source of joy and delight to their proud 2-23 grandfather; and 2-24 WHEREAS, Although his presence will be greatly missed, Frank 2-25 Wright has left those around him with a legacy of compassion and 2-26 commitment by which to remember him, and in doing so he has ensured 2-27 that his unique spirit will live on in the hearts of the many 3-1 people whose lives he has touched; by generously giving of his time 3-2 and special talents to all around him, he has reminded us that each 3-3 citizen is capable of giving back to the community, and such 3-4 altruism is the mark of a truly noble individual; now, therefore, 3-5 be it 3-6 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas 3-7 hereby pay tribute to the life of Frank L. Wright and extend 3-8 deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his beloved 3-9 wife, Marjorie; to his daughters, Beverly Witwer and Jan Burke; to 3-10 his granddaughters, Wendy, Amy, Shannon, and Lindsey; and to all 3-11 those who were honored to know this fine man; and, be it further 3-12 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-13 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 3-14 House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in 3-15 memory of Frank L. Wright.
