H.C.R. No. 163
                              HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The members of the Texas Legislature are proud to
    1-2  honor Paul M. Vazaldua, Jr., of McAllen for the many significant
    1-3  contributions he has made to the political process in Hidalgo
    1-4  County and South Texas; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, The son of Pablo M. Vazaldua, Sr., and Vilma E.
    1-6  Chavez, Mr. Vazaldua earned his political science degree from The
    1-7  University of Texas--Pan American where he distinguished himself as
    1-8  executive advisor of the Student Government Association, working to
    1-9  improve the university's food service delivery and to strengthen
   1-10  the administration of student financial aid; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Well versed in the issues of governance, he first
   1-12  entered the political arena as a campaign staff worker in 1986, and
   1-13  for the past seven years has played an active role in grass roots
   1-14  organization efforts, encouraging younger voters in his community
   1-15  to become active in the political process and working with the
   1-16  Hidalgo County Women's Political Caucus to increase voter turnout;
   1-17  and
   1-18        WHEREAS, Mr. Vazaldua has become involved in voter education
   1-19  issues by informing South Texans of their voting rights, and
   1-20  through his efforts as deputy registrar of Hidalgo County and his
   1-21  work on voter registration drives with the League of Women Voters,
   1-22  has helped countless individuals to become active participants in
   1-23  the democratic process; and
   1-24        WHEREAS, A man of unflagging energies, he has capably served
    2-1  the Democratic Party on the local, state, and national levels
    2-2  through his leadership roles in the Hidalgo County Young Democrats
    2-3  and Texas Young Democrats and as a volunteer coordinator with the
    2-4  1992 Democratic presidential campaign; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Mr. Vazaldua also has served the residents of South
    2-6  Texas through his noteworthy community service, helping those less
    2-7  fortunate through his volunteer efforts with the Rio Grande Valley
    2-8  Food Bank and seeking to address the educational needs of the
    2-9  community through his work toward the establishment of South Texas
   2-10  Community College; and
   2-11        WHEREAS, A man of great vision, Mr. Vazaldua's active
   2-12  involvement in the political process has greatly benefitted the
   2-13  South Texas community, and his exceptional efforts in this regard
   2-14  truly merit special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it
   2-15        RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-16  hereby honor Paul Vazaldua for his exceptional involvement in the
   2-17  political arena and for his outstanding contributions to voter
   2-18  education in our state; and, be it further
   2-19        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-20  prepared for Mr. Vazaldua as an expression of high regard by the
   2-21  Legislature of the State of Texas.
