H.C.R. No. 179
                              HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, John J. Grumbles came to Texas in 1837 and moved to
    1-2  Travis County around 1840; and
    1-3        WHEREAS, The second owner of Barton Springs, Captain Grumbles
    1-4  operated a ferry across the Colorado River; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, In charge of the barbecue held on the Fourth of July
    1-6  in 1852 celebrating the new Capitol building, Captain Grumbles
    1-7  built the Swante Palm Log Cabin in Zilker Park; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, One of the early Texas Rangers, Captain Grumbles
    1-9  formed a company that fought in the Mexican War in 1845 and also
   1-10  led a company of Rangers in the Indian Wars in 1850; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, After his death in 1858, Captain Grumbles was buried
   1-12  in the first grave in San Saba, Texas, which remains there today;
   1-13  and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Captain John J. Grumbles was a true pioneer hero of
   1-15  early Texas and it is appropriate that his contributions to the
   1-16  development of our state receive special legislative recognition;
   1-17  now, therefore, be it
   1-18        RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
   1-19  hereby honor the memory of Captain John J. Grumbles and acknowledge
   1-20  his courage and enterprise in the settlement of Texas; and, be it
   1-21  further
   1-22        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   1-23  prepared for the family of Captain Grumbles as an expression of
   1-24  admiration by the Texas Legislature.
