H.R. No. 35 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Rated as the top team in its class at the end of the 1-2 1991-1992 regular season, the Troup High School boys' basketball 1-3 team lived up to its lofty ranking throughout the playoffs to claim 1-4 the 1992 University Interscholastic League Class 2A state 1-5 basketball championship; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The team's victory in the March 14 championship game 1-7 secured its reputation as one of the basketball powerhouses in 1-8 Class 2A in recent years, capping the Tigers' meteoric rise to 1-9 prominence under the capable leadership of head coach Leland Hand; 1-10 and 1-11 WHEREAS, During Coach Hand's six-year tenure at the helm of 1-12 the basketball program, the Troup Tigers have improved steadily 1-13 each year en route to basketball supremacy in Class 2A, earning 1-14 four trips to the state basketball tournament in the last five 1-15 years and making three consecutive appearances in the state 1-16 championship game; and 1-17 WHEREAS, In 1988, in Coach Hand's second year at the school, 1-18 Troup posted an impressive 31-3 record, finishing as one of the top 1-19 four teams in the state and advancing to the state tournament for 1-20 the first time since 1956; after a year's absence from the state 1-21 tournament, the team posted back-to-back records of 33-3 in 1990 1-22 and 1991, each time reaching the state final; and 1-23 WHEREAS, The Tigers completed their ascent to the top in 1-24 1992, compiling a remarkable 35-1 season record against top-notch 2-1 competition, falling only to a Class 5A team in mid-season for the 2-2 Tigers' only loss of the 1991-1992 campaign; and 2-3 WHEREAS, The state champion Tigers earned their distinction 2-4 as the premier Class 2A team in the state with a deep and talented 2-5 lineup of outstanding young athletes, including three members named 2-6 to the Class 2A All-Tournament team: Greg Austin, Edward Jasper, 2-7 and Joey Martin; a repeat All-Tournament team selection, Greg 2-8 Austin garnered additional honors for his superb performance in the 2-9 1992 tournament by also being voted the tournament's Most Valuable 2-10 Player; and 2-11 WHEREAS, The Tigers' state title is also attributable to the 2-12 total team effort that complemented its members' individual 2-13 talents, and the team's success reflects the selfless contributions 2-14 made throughout the year by teammates David Mills, Nicky Lacy, 2-15 Jerome Jiles, Billy Matlock, Samuel Myers, Anthony Jones, Tony 2-16 White, Ray Franklin, Chuck Lafferty, Adrean Matlock, and Tony 2-17 Kincade; and 2-18 WHEREAS, The noteworthy achievements of the Troup High School 2-19 boys' basketball team are in keeping with the standards of 2-20 excellence espoused by the Troup Independent School District in all 2-21 academic and extracurricular endeavors, and this exceptional group 2-22 of young student athletes has truly earned special legislative 2-23 praise and recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-25 Legislature hereby congratulate head coach Leland Hand and the 2-26 Troup High School Tigers on their achievement in winning the 1992 2-27 UIL Class 2A state basketball championship to culminate an 3-1 outstanding season of athletic competition; and, be it further 3-2 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-3 prepared for the members of the team and the coaching staff and 3-4 that a copy of this resolution be prepared for prominent display at 3-5 Troup High School as an expression of high regard by the Texas 3-6 House of Representatives. 3-7 Troup High School as an expression of high regard by the Texas 3-8 House of Representatives. 3-9 Kamel 3-10 H.R.
