R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, In December 1992, Barry W. Uhr, M.D., was elected to
1-2 the board of trustees of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and
1-3 this special recognition is indeed well-deserved; and
1-4 WHEREAS, A native Texan, Dr. Uhr was born in New Braunfels
1-5 and exhibited his characteristic drive and commitment from an early
1-6 age; blessed with the guiding influence of a loving and close-knit
1-7 family, he attended The University of Texas following high school
1-8 and majored in premedicine; and
1-9 WHEREAS, While a student at the university and working as a
1-10 lab instructor, Dr. Uhr met his bride-to-be, Karen, who was a
1-11 microbiology student employed in a part-time position in a science
1-12 department lab; and
1-13 WHEREAS, During the early years of their marriage, Mrs. Uhr
1-14 worked for the Dallas County Health Department while her husband
1-15 attended The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School; and
1-16 WHEREAS, After his graduation in 1965, Dr. Uhr spent a year
1-17 at Baltimore City Hospitals as an intern in medicine; he later
1-18 served two years at Mather Air Force Base near Sacramento,
1-19 California, before moving on to complete his ophthalmology
1-20 residency under Harold G. Schele, M.D., at the Hospital of the
1-21 University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia; and
1-22 WHEREAS, By the time the Uhrs returned to Dallas in
1-23 1971, they were the proud parents of three fine children, Bradley,
1-24 Kristin, and Kimberly, and Mrs. Uhr devoted herself to providing a
2-1 happy and secure homelife for her family; despite the demands of
2-2 his profession, Dr. Uhr also put his children first, always making
2-3 time to help them with extracurricular activities; and
2-4 WHEREAS, Today, with his children grown, Dr. Uhr shares his
2-5 time and energy with a number of volunteer and professional
2-6 organizations; he has served as a councilor to the Texas
2-7 Ophthalmological Association and to the American Academy of
2-8 Ophthalmology, and was an active member of the academy's executive
2-9 committee for several years; and
2-10 WHEREAS, A past president of the Dallas Academy of
2-11 Ophthalmology as well, he is a fellow in the American College of
2-12 Surgeons, a member of the Texas Society of Ophthalmology and
2-13 Otolaryngology, the outgoing president of the Dallas County Medical
2-14 Society for 1992, and a board member and past president of the
2-15 Dallas chapter of the Texas Society for the Prevention of
2-16 Blindness; and
2-17 WHEREAS, Highly regarded by all who have the pleasure of
2-18 knowing him, Dr. Uhr has earned the respect and admiration of his
2-19 colleagues for his unwavering commitment to the highest standards
2-20 of professionalism and excellence in patient care; and
2-21 WHEREAS, Throughout his remarkable career, Dr. Uhr has
2-22 demonstrated exceptional dedication to his profession and
2-23 community; it is indeed appropriate that he receive special
2-24 legislative recognition on the occasion of his most recent and
2-25 well-deserved honor; now, therefore, be it
2-26 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
2-27 Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Barry W. Uhr on his election to
3-1 the board of trustees of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and
3-2 commend him on his many significant contributions to the betterment
3-3 of his state and community as a physician and civic leader; and, be
3-4 it further
3-5 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-6 prepared for Dr. Uhr as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3-7 House of Representatives.
