                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to join
    1-2  the family and many friends of Lydia Mae Smith Brewer in wishing
    1-3  her the happiest of celebrations on the occasion of her 90th
    1-4  birthday on January 28, 1993; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, This lovely lady was born in 1903 in Tuscumbia,
    1-6  Alabama, and was one of 12 children, including a sister, Eva Clare,
    1-7  two brothers, Charles and William M., and eight half-brothers and
    1-8  sisters; the family later settled in Sheffield, a town just a few
    1-9  miles up the road; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Her father, Milas Norman Smith, owned Smith Lake and
   1-11  operated a water-powered sawmill and gristmill, while her mother,
   1-12  Frank Ada Moody Smith, raised their large and active family in this
   1-13  pleasant rural setting; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, In what surely must have seemed like paradise to the
   1-15  Smith children, all 12 had the good fortune to live and work at the
   1-16  local recreation center, which had a skating rink and a bowling
   1-17  alley they could enjoy in their free time; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, As a young woman, Mrs. Brewer taught at Grey Rock
   1-19  school for a year and, while residing in nearby Spruce Pine, walked
   1-20  the 2-1/2 miles to church; after a brief time, she returned to
   1-21  Sheffield and worked for the telephone company; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, She married Daniel Leonard Brewer on November 21,
   1-23  1925, and the couple moved to Detroit, Michigan, before eventually
   1-24  making their way to North Texas, where they resided in the towns of
    2-1  Era, Sanger, and Denton; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, The Brewers shared a happy and rewarding marriage
    2-3  that lasted nearly 60 years and together raised four beloved
    2-4  children:  Jean Brewer Childers, Laura Brewer Kellum, Linda Brewer
    2-5  Phillips, and James A. Brewer; over the years Mrs. Brewer's family
    2-6  has grown to include eight grandchildren and 11
    2-7  great-grandchildren; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, While in Denton, Mrs. Brewer applied her
    2-9  considerable cooking skills at Davis Bakery and worked for the
   2-10  Denton Independent School District in the high school cafeteria;
   2-11  preferring to keep busy, Mrs. Brewer took a job with Sublett's
   2-12  Store after her retirement; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, Throughout her long and fulfilling life, Mrs. Brewer
   2-14  has touched the lives of many individuals with her warmth, good
   2-15  sense, and generosity and has in turn been cherished by her family
   2-16  and her many friends; this remarkable lady's 90th birthday is
   2-17  indeed a joyous occasion that merits special legislative
   2-18  recognition; now, therefore, be it
   2-19        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-20  Legislature congratulate Lydia Mae Smith Brewer on the noteworthy
   2-21  occasion of her 90th birthday; and, be it further
   2-22        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-23  prepared for Mrs. Brewer as an expression of highest regard by the
   2-24  Texas House of Representatives.
