No. 79 73R1887 WMS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On November 28, 1992, Janie Kallus, a retired nurse 1-2 from Schulenburg, Texas, became the first winner of Lotto Texas, 1-3 claiming a prize of $21,760,794.64; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born on a farm near Ammannsville to Rudolph and Mary 1-5 Kallus, she attended her final two years of school in Schulenburg 1-6 before beginning a long and rewarding career in health care; and 1-7 WHEREAS, After three years spent working for a Schulenburg 1-8 physician, this dedicated and compassionate woman relocated to 1-9 Houston to attend nursing school; Ms. Kallus then spent 22 years 1-10 providing invaluable assistance to a Houston physician until his 1-11 retirement; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Her nursing career continued at Methodist Hospital 1-13 in Houston, where she devoted much of her time to the care of 1-14 chronically ill patients, working tirelessly to ease their physical 1-15 and emotional pain; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Following her well-deserved retirement in June 1992, 1-17 she returned to Schulenburg where she built a modest three-bedroom 1-18 brick home and spent time cultivating her vegetable garden and 1-19 enjoying her dog, Fred; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Before winning Lotto Texas, this exceptional woman's 1-21 generosity of spirit had been rewarded by bingo earnings that she 1-22 used to contribute towards her niece's wedding reception; and 1-23 WHEREAS, By carefully studying lottery drawings in other 1-24 states, Ms. Kallus indicated her considerable instinct and savvy by 2-1 noting which numbers appeared most often in other state drawings; 2-2 her winning system produced the numbers 24, 21, 9, 28, and 17, with 2-3 50 added to complete the required six numbers; and 2-4 WHEREAS, In an amazing feat, she not only chose the winning 2-5 numbers, but selected them in the exact sequence in which they were 2-6 drawn, an event which has a microscopically small statistical 2-7 probability of 1 in 11.4 billion; and 2-8 WHEREAS, This inspirational individual has made only modest 2-9 plans for her newfound wealth, her relatives, primarily her mother 2-10 and her aunt, being her chief concern; and 2-11 WHEREAS, Governor Ann Richards made reference to Ms. Kallus 2-12 as "an angel sent from heaven" and further stated in a speech at 2-13 the Governor's Gala that Janie Kallus was an ideal first winner of 2-14 the new Lotto Texas; now, therefore, be it 2-15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-16 Legislature hereby congratulate Janie Kallus as a deserving winner 2-17 of the first Lotto Texas jackpot and extend to her sincere best 2-18 wishes for continued good fortune; and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-20 prepared for Ms. Kallus as an expression of high regard by the 2-21 Texas House of Representatives.
