H.R. No. 86
R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, March 10, 1993, marks the historic 120th anniversary
1-2 of the linkage of two great railroads, the Houston and Texas
1-3 Central and the Missouri Kansas and Texas, in Denison, Texas; and
1-4 WHEREAS, The arrival of the first Houston and Texas Central
1-5 train in Denison in 1873 signaled the dawn of a new era for Texas
1-6 and the nation, binding north and south forever with twin steel
1-7 rails, an event comparable to the historic joining of the Union
1-8 Pacific and Central Pacific railroads at Promontory Point, Utah,
1-9 which gave America its first railway connecting the Atlantic and
1-10 Pacific coasts; and
1-11 WHEREAS, Completing the historic confluence of the Houston
1-12 and Texas Central and the Missouri Kansas and Texas railways
1-13 established Denison as the western-most rail junction where
1-14 north-to-south, border-to-border rail connections existed; and
1-15 WHEREAS, An era of enormous prosperity was brought about by
1-16 this event, which provided a direct linkage between Texas cities,
1-17 especially the Gulf ports, and St. Louis and other Midwest markets,
1-18 and ushered the state into the industrial age; and
1-19 WHEREAS, At the time of its occurrence, this tremendous
1-20 achievement was given little pomp and fanfare for an event of such
1-21 far-reaching significance; and
1-22 WHEREAS, On its 120th anniversary, the joining together of
1-23 the Houston and Texas Central and the Missouri Kansas and Texas
1-24 railroads will be celebrated with the unveiling of a historic
2-1 plaque, a luncheon, and the ceremonial driving in of a golden spike
2-2 at the location where the first train stopped 120 years ago, and
2-3 this significant occasion truly merits special legislative
2-4 recognition; now, therefore, be it
2-5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
