No. 86 73R1856 WMS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, March 10, 1993, marks the historic 120th anniversary 1-2 of the linkage of two great railroads, the Houston and Texas 1-3 Central and the Missouri Kansas and Texas, in Denison, Texas; and 1-4 WHEREAS, The arrival of the first Houston and Texas Central 1-5 train in Denison in 1873 signaled the dawn of a new era for Texas 1-6 and the nation, binding north and south forever with twin steel 1-7 rails, an event comparable to the historic joining of the Union 1-8 Pacific and Central Pacific railroads at Promontory Point, Utah, 1-9 which gave America its first railway connecting the Atlantic and 1-10 Pacific coasts; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Completing the historic confluence of the Houston 1-12 and Texas Central and the Missouri Kansas and Texas railways 1-13 established Denison as the western-most rail junction where 1-14 north-to-south, border-to-border rail connections existed; and 1-15 WHEREAS, An era of enormous prosperity was brought about by 1-16 this event, which provided a direct linkage between Texas cities, 1-17 especially the Gulf ports, and St. Louis and other Midwest markets, 1-18 and ushered the state into the industrial age; and 1-19 WHEREAS, At the time of its occurrence, this tremendous 1-20 achievement was given little pomp and fanfare for an event of such 1-21 far-reaching significance; and 1-22 WHEREAS, On its 120th anniversary, the joining together of 1-23 the Houston and Texas Central and the Missouri Kansas and Texas 1-24 railroads will be celebrated with the unveiling of a historic 2-1 plaque, a luncheon, and the ceremonial driving in of a golden spike 2-2 at the location where the first train stopped 120 years ago, and 2-3 this significant occasion truly merits special legislative 2-4 recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-6 Legislature hereby commemorate the 120th anniversary of the 2-7 conjunction of the Houston and Texas Central and the Missouri 2-8 Kansas and Texas railroads in Denison, and acknowledge its historic 2-9 significance to Texas and the nation; and, be it further 2-10 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-11 prepared for Keith Hubbard, Sr., chairman of the Golden Spike 2-12 Committee, as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of 2-13 Representatives.
