H.R. No. 88
R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, On January 17, 1993, Rafael Cantu, superintendent of
1-2 the Mission Consolidated Independent School District, presided over
1-3 the dedication of Carl C. Waitz Elementary School in Mission,
1-4 Texas; and
1-5 WHEREAS, This impressive new facility covers 75,000 square
1-6 feet, houses 44 classrooms, and has the capacity to serve the needs
1-7 of 950 students; and
1-8 WHEREAS, The school was named for the late Mr. Waitz, an
1-9 esteemed businessman and civic leader in Mission, who devoted much
1-10 of his life to the betterment of his community; and
1-11 WHEREAS, Born to George and Camille Cahen Waitz on August 20,
1-12 1924, in San Antonio, this native Texan joined the Army Air Corps
1-13 as a young man and proudly served his country with distinction
1-14 during World War II; and
1-15 WHEREAS, In 1960, Mr. Waitz moved to Mission and opened his
1-16 own grocery store, the Mission Minimax; with his considerable
1-17 business acumen, he was later able to expand his retail enterprise
1-18 to include a chain of six stores across the valley region; and
1-19 WHEREAS, For more than three decades, Mr. Waitz tirelessly
1-20 gave of himself to benefit his community, serving as president of
1-21 the Lions Club, as a member of the Mission Chamber of Commerce, and
1-22 on the Mission School Board, on which he was an invaluable servant
1-23 to the cause of education for 15 years; this esteemed gentleman
1-24 also provided vital leadership to the Hidalgo County United Way,
2-1 the board of First National/NBC Bank of Mission, and the board of
2-2 Texas Retail Grocers; and
2-3 WHEREAS, Included among the many well-deserved awards given
2-4 to Mr. Waitz over the course of his lifetime were the TRGA Spirit
2-5 of Texas award in 1987, the NGA Spirit of America award in 1988,
2-6 the Rio Grande Valley Advertiser of the Year award in 1988, the
2-7 1990 NGA Certificate of Appreciation award for his contributions as
2-8 a member of the American Presidents Club, and the 1991 TFIA
2-9 Retailer of the Year and Recognition of Excellence awards; and
2-10 WHEREAS, Respected and admired by his colleagues, neighbors,
2-11 and many friends, he was further honored by his community when he
2-12 was designated "Mr. Mission" in 1986; and
2-13 WHEREAS, Carl C. Waitz Elementary School, like its namesake,
2-14 is committed to the ideal of excellence in education and will
2-15 surely serve the students of tomorrow with the same dedication and
2-16 distinction as Mr. Waitz served the community in the past; now,
2-17 therefore, be it
2-18 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
2-19 Legislature hereby congratulate the Mission Consolidated
2-20 Independent School District on the occasion of the dedication of
2-21 Carl C. Waitz Elementary School and extend commendations to all
2-22 those who have worked so hard to ensure the success of this fine
2-23 institution; and, be it further
2-24 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-25 prepared for prominent display at Carl C. Waitz Elementary School
2-26 as an expression of high esteem by the Texas House of
2-27 Representatives.
