No. 104 73R2844 JLZ-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Mildred Cleveland Thornton, an esteemed resident of 1-2 Cameron, died on January 9, 1993, at the age of 80, and her passing 1-3 has profoundly saddened her family and her many friends throughout 1-4 this Milam County community; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A native of Alabama, Mrs. Thornton was a longtime 1-6 resident of Cameron and had been actively involved in various 1-7 aspects of business, civic, and social life in this east Central 1-8 Texas town for many years, making significant contributions to the 1-9 well-being of the community; and 1-10 WHEREAS, She was highly regarded for her managerial 1-11 expertise, which she put to effective use not only in her business 1-12 affairs as manager of the Cox Estate Office in Cameron but also 1-13 during her six-year tenure at the head of city government as mayor 1-14 of Cameron; the first woman to hold the top municipal post in 1-15 Cameron, she was elected mayor in 1978 and went on to serve with 1-16 distinction in this office until 1984; and 1-17 WHEREAS, The leadership ability and the commitment to public 1-18 service that propelled her into city government also were evident 1-19 in her involvement with numerous other local civic, cultural, and 1-20 community service organizations; and 1-21 WHEREAS, She was a past president of such notable groups as 1-22 the Friends of the Cameron Library, the Cameron Delphian Club, and 1-23 the Cameron History Club and was active in the Cameron Tourism 1-24 Committee, seeking in these endeavors not only to enhance the 2-1 quality of life for area residents but to promote the advantages of 2-2 life in this picturesque community; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Mrs. Thornton also earned widespread respect for her 2-4 diverse record of public service as a valued member of the Central 2-5 Texas Mental Health and Mental Retardation Board, the Central Texas 2-6 Hospital Executive Board, and the Central Texas Council of 2-7 Governments Advisory Council; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Above all, she was a warm and caring woman who 2-9 gained the love and respect of the many people whose lives she 2-10 touched, and though her presence will be deeply missed, she will 2-11 continue to live on in their hearts and minds; now, therefore, be 2-12 it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-14 Legislature hereby honor the memory of Mildred Cleveland Thornton 2-15 and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her family, including 2-16 her sister Sallie Gay of Montgomery, Alabama, and her numerous 2-17 nieces and nephews, as well as to the many people who have mourned 2-18 the death of this exceptional individual; and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-20 prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas 2-21 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-22 Mildred Cleveland Thornton.
