                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor
    1-2  Amparo G.  Gutierrez, an esteemed resident of Laredo, on her
    1-3  longstanding and exemplary record of service to her community; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Born on September 19, 1923, in San Antonio, she was
    1-5  raised and attended public schools in the Alamo City before
    1-6  establishing a permanent residence in Laredo, where she began an
    1-7  active involvement in the life of that border community that would
    1-8  continue unabated up until the present; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, A lifelong advocate of the idea that education is
   1-10  essential to improving the quality of life for everyone in the
   1-11  community, she continued her education at Laredo Business College,
   1-12  where she acquired the necessary skills to pursue a career; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, When she was given the opportunity to put her skills
   1-14  to work in her first job, she did so with great energy, dedication,
   1-15  and consequently with great success; impressed by her diligence and
   1-16  ability, her employer recommended her for a more lucrative position
   1-17  elsewhere that would help her better realize her potential; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, Employed by the Thom McAn Company, she quickly rose
   1-19  to occupy a managerial position, which she ably filled for four
   1-20  years; she left the employ of Thom McAn when she and her husband,
   1-21  Feliciano S. Gutierrez, jointly established their own business; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Although she achieved recognition as a successful
   1-23  businesswoman, it was as a dedicated community leader and activist
   1-24  that she gained the greatest esteem throughout the community; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Possessing an abiding faith in God, she transformed
    2-2  her religious convictions into positive actions, committing herself
    2-3  wholeheartedly in numerous activities that she believed would
    2-4  enhance the spiritual and temporal well-being of those around her;
    2-5  and
    2-6        WHEREAS, She became a valued member of numerous local church
    2-7  and civic organizations engaged in service to the community,
    2-8  serving at various times as a member of the building committee at
    2-9  St. Patrick's Church, as a board member for the Mary Help of
   2-10  Christians School, and as a member of an advisory board for Laredo
   2-11  Junior College; and
   2-12        WHEREAS, She also was able to make many significant
   2-13  contributions to the community's school-age children over the
   2-14  years, having enjoyed a remarkable 23-year tenure as a member of
   2-15  the board of trustees for the United Independent School District;
   2-16  in recognition of her exceptional service in this regard, the
   2-17  school district named its newly opened Amparo Gutierrez Elementary
   2-18  School campus in her honor at the school's formal dedication on
   2-19  October 25, 1992; and
   2-20        WHEREAS, This most recent tribute adds to an impressive list
   2-21  of honors she has received for her tireless endeavors in the
   2-22  community; in 1983 she received well-deserved recognition when she
   2-23  was named Woman of the Year, and she later was awarded a
   2-24  certificate of merit for her outstanding volunteerism by the
   2-25  commissioner for mental retardation services at the 1992 MHMR state
   2-26  convention; and
   2-27        WHEREAS, An indefatigable champion of those less fortunate or
    3-1  in need, she also gives generously of her time and energy to such
    3-2  organizations as the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, the Catholic
    3-3  Daughters, the Santa Lucia Society, and the St. Patrick's Church
    3-4  Altar Society; and
    3-5        WHEREAS, In all of her many worthy endeavors, whether as a
    3-6  devoted wife and mother, as a dedicated activist in the cause of
    3-7  social justice, or as a leader in the educational community, this
    3-8  truly exceptional individual has worked selflessly for the benefit
    3-9  of others and in so doing provides a shining example for Texans
   3-10  everywhere to emulate; now, therefore, be it
   3-11        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 72nd Texas
   3-12  Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby honor Amparo G. Gutierrez
   3-13  of Laredo for her outstanding record of humanitarian service and
   3-14  her significant contributions to the betterment of the South Texas
   3-15  community; and, be it further
   3-16        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   3-17  prepared for presentation to Mrs. Gutierrez as an expression of
   3-18  high esteem by the Texas House of Representatives.
