                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, John Lucas, the new head coach of the San Antonio
    1-2  Spurs, has stunned basketball aficionados across the nation, taking
    1-3  a team mired in mediocrity and transforming it into a National
    1-4  Basketball Association powerhouse; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, An NBA first round draft pick of the Houston Rockets
    1-6  in the mid-1970s, Mr. Lucas's exceptional basketball talents were
    1-7  undermined, and his career was threatened, by the specter of
    1-8  substance abuse; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, After conquering his own chemical dependency, this
   1-10  courageous individual sought to help others down the difficult road
   1-11  he had so recently traversed himself by founding a program to aid
   1-12  those persons who were struggling with alcohol- and drug-related
   1-13  problems; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Taking the helm of the Spurs earlier this season,
   1-15  John Lucas challenged his players to strive for new heights both
   1-16  individually and as a team, and the Spurs responded magnificently,
   1-17  winning 14 times against only two defeats, including a franchise
   1-18  record of nine consecutive victories; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, John Lucas has lifted the spirits of those around
   1-20  him, both as an NBA coach and as a voice of hope to those who are
   1-21  striving to free themselves from the wreckage of substance abuse,
   1-22  and his outstanding achievements truly merit special legislative
   1-23  recognition; now, therefore, be it
   1-24        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
    2-1  Legislature hereby congratulate John Lucas for his outstanding
    2-2  accomplishments as the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs and as a
    2-3  humanitarian and extend sincere best wishes to him for continued
    2-4  success and happiness for many years to come; and, be it further
    2-5        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
    2-6  prepared for Mr. Lucas as an expression of high regard by the Texas
    2-7  House of Representatives.
