                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, Each year the historic community of San Diego in
    1-2  Duval and Jim Wells counties pays tribute to the area's rich
    1-3  Hispanic culture with a popular community event, the Fiesta de San
    1-4  Diego; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, The community of San Diego was first settled as a
    1-6  frontier trading post in 1848 in the untamed area of the Nueces
    1-7  strip by families from the Escandon settlements of Mier, Camargo,
    1-8  and Agualeguas; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Serving as a hub for early development of the area
   1-10  that was commonly known as the brush country, the community became
   1-11  a springboard for the founding of other nearby communities such as
   1-12  Benavides, Freer, and Hebbronville; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, During the early years of its development, the area
   1-14  served as the site where Mexican vaqueros, who lived in San Diego
   1-15  and nearby ranches, would gather herds for cattle drives; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, The predecessors of the cowboys who would one day be
   1-17  romanticized in Western films, these vaqueros developed a hearty
   1-18  bread, which was known as Pan de Campo, to serve as nourishment
   1-19  during their long stays in the brush and on cattle drives; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Today, modern day residents of San Diego pay tribute
   1-21  to the contributions of the vaqueros with the Pan de Campo Contest,
   1-22  which serves as the theme of Fiesta de San Diego each year; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Through their sponsorship of Fiesta de San Diego,
   1-24  the citizens of San Diego continue to preserve and revitalize the
    2-1  area's rich Hispanic heritage; their exceptional efforts in this
    2-2  regard will enable many Texans to share and appreciate the enduring
    2-3  gifts of Hispanic culture; now, therefore, be it
    2-4        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
    2-5  Legislature hereby recognize the Fiesta de San Diego Pan de Campo
    2-6  as the official Pan de Campo celebration in Texas and commend the
    2-7  citizens of San Diego for their significant accomplishments in
    2-8  promoting the heritage of their Hispanic ancestors and the role
    2-9  they played in building a vibrant South Texas; and, be it further
   2-10        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-11  prepared for the city of San Diego as the official certificate of
   2-12  this special designation.
