                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, Luis Garcia, Jr., retired on December 31, 1992, from
    1-2  his position as staff photographer for The Monitor, ending a
    1-3  distinguished career in photojournalism that has spanned more than
    1-4  four decades; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, In 1950 Mr. Garcia began taking photographs for the
    1-6  Edinburg Daily Review, and three years later he moved on to
    1-7  employment with The Monitor, where his still images graced the
    1-8  pages of that noteworthy publication for 39 years; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, The Monitor's only full-time photographer for 20
   1-10  years, this beloved individual is so closely identified with the
   1-11  newspaper that Mr. Garcia is known by many people throughout the
   1-12  Rio Grande Valley and northern Mexico as "the pillar of The
   1-13  Monitor"; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Having taken between 50,000 and 60,000 photographs
   1-15  during his storied career, this talented person has frozen in time
   1-16  for the paper's readers many unforgettable images, including the
   1-17  tragic Alton school bus crash of 1989, and glimpses of Presidents
   1-18  Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton, as
   1-19  well as many foreign dignitaries; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Dedicated to his community as well as his art,
   1-21  Mr. Garcia became a member of the Lions Club in 1974 and has been a
   1-22  chamber of commerce greeter for 11 years; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Throughout his exceptional career, this devoted
   1-24  family man has enjoyed the love and support of his wife, Vitalia
    2-1  Villa Garcia; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, Mr. Garcia's remarkable photographic artistry has
    2-3  illuminated many moments and events, giving to them a sense of
    2-4  depth and immediacy that might have escaped a lesser eye, and as he
    2-5  begins his well-deserved retirement, he can indeed look back with
    2-6  tremendous pride and satisfaction on his exemplary career; now,
    2-7  therefore, be it
    2-8        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
    2-9  Legislature hereby commend Luis Garcia, Jr., on his remarkable
   2-10  contributions as a photojournalist and extend sincere best wishes
   2-11  to him for a happy and productive retirement; and, be it further
   2-12        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-13  prepared for Mr. Garcia as an expression of high regard by the
   2-14  Texas House of Representatives.
