No. 172 73R3386 PFG-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, For more than 40 years, Brenham residents have been 1-2 greeted by the welcome sound of their newspaper carrier Mrs. Lilia 1-3 Hertel delivering The Banner Press to their doorsteps; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hertel got her start in the newspaper business 1-5 driving her son Glenwood on his paper route so he could safely 1-6 deliver the Houston Press to its widely dispersed readers in the 1-7 Brenham area; and 1-8 WHEREAS, With a knack for pitching papers and an affinity for 1-9 the newspaper business, Mrs. Hertel soon joined The Banner Press, 1-10 where she rapidly became an invaluable employee and a reliable and 1-11 cheerful sight on her local route; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hertel's other children, Charles and Gayle, 1-13 also have had paper routes and, following her example, have 1-14 acquired the lasting values of commitment and punctuality this 1-15 character-building job imparts; at times her sons handled several 1-16 paper routes simultaneously, while her daughter still delivers the 1-17 paper and has had her own route for 26 years; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Most recently, Mrs. Hertel's grandchildren have 1-19 accompanied her on her paper route, sharing in this worthwhile 1-20 occupation that is a Hertel family tradition as well as a classic 1-21 part of our American heritage; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hertel also is an accomplished seamstress who 1-23 has taught sewing at the downtown Singer sewing machine store and 1-24 once owned a Necchi Elna sewing machine store; her late husband, 2-1 Willie Hertel, was employed at Brenham Wholesale; and 2-2 WHEREAS, At the newspaper, Mrs. Hertel has earned praise from 2-3 The Banner Press publisher and editor, Charles Moser, for her 2-4 outstanding service and has inspired all the paper's employees with 2-5 the great enthusiasm and skill she applies to her job; and 2-6 WHEREAS, A truly remarkable woman, Mrs. Hertel has brought 2-7 the news to the citizens of Brenham for more than four decades and 2-8 has earned a special place in the hearts of the members of this 2-9 close-knit community; an outstanding employee and citizen and a 2-10 devoted mother, she is indeed deserving of special legislative 2-11 recognition for her many contributions in this regard; now, 2-12 therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-14 Legislature hereby commend Mrs. Lilia Hertel for her many years of 2-15 loyal dedicated service delivering The Banner Press; and, be it 2-16 further 2-17 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared 2-18 for her and for prominent display at The Banner Press' offices as 2-19 an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
