H.R. No. 231 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, For many years, Collin County has enjoyed a 1-2 well-deserved reputation as one of the state's most vibrant 1-3 counties; and 1-4 WHEREAS, The history of the county dates to 1842, when Collin 1-5 McKinney, for whom the county was later named, joined with Dr. 1-6 William Edward Throckmorton to establish settlements on the upper 1-7 blackland prairie and build their respective homesteads near the 1-8 present communities of Anna and McKinney; and 1-9 WHEREAS, News of the area's abundant natural resources 1-10 quickly spread, attracting other settlers in sufficient numbers to 1-11 warrant political organization in 1846; the first county seat was 1-12 established in Buckner, where a one-room log cabin served as the 1-13 courthouse; and 1-14 WHEREAS, In 1848 the county seat was moved to McKinney; 1-15 flourishing on an economy based on livestock and agricultural 1-16 production, the county's population expanded by the mid-nineteenth 1-17 century to include almost 2,000 residents; and 1-18 WHEREAS, The Houston and Texas Central Railroad was completed 1-19 to McKinney in 1872, linking Collin County to the state's key 1-20 manufacturing centers; in the coming years, additional rail lines 1-21 were laid, connecting the county to other commercial hubs across 1-22 Texas; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Today the community draws many visitors each year 1-24 who come to enjoy its wealth of cultural and natural resources; 2-1 popular attractions include the Bolin Wildlife Exhibit, the hot-air 2-2 balloon festival held in September, Lake Lavon with its fine 2-3 fishing and water sports, and several historic sites composing the 2-4 McKinney Historical District, the Old Collin County Post Office, 2-5 and a number of restored homes which are open to the public for 2-6 tours; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Now boasting a population of more than 264,000, 2-8 Collin County is a prosperous, forward-looking community in the 2-9 finest of Texas traditions; located in the Dallas metropolitan 2-10 area, it enjoys a vibrant economy based on a variety of 2-11 manufacturing plants, diverse retail and wholesale industries, and 2-12 continuing agricultural and livestock production; and 2-13 WHEREAS, It is indeed appropriate that the Texas House of 2-14 Representatives recognize Collin County and its citizens for their 2-15 many accomplishments and contributions to the greatness of our 2-16 state; now, therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-18 Legislature hereby declare February 9, 1993, as Collin County Day 2-19 at the Capitol and extend best wishes to all of its citizens on 2-20 this noteworthy occasion; and, be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-22 prepared for Collin County as an expression of high regard by the 2-23 Texas House of Representatives. 2-24 McCall 2-25 James 2-26 McCall 2-27 James
