H.R. No. 232 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to 1-2 salute Edward Anthony "Eddie" Corral, the fire chief for the city 1-3 of Houston, for his immeasurable contributions to his community, 1-4 profession, state, and nation; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Born on July 4, 1931, this patriotic American served 1-6 in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1962 with distinction, achieving 1-7 the rank of sergeant during his one year of active duty and 1-8 remaining in the reserves for 11 additional years; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Following his active military service, Mr. Corral 1-10 pursued his undergraduate education at the University of Houston 1-11 where he majored in electrical engineering; dedicated to furthering 1-12 his intellectual and professional development, he also completed 1-13 extensive course work at Houston Community College, the U.S. 1-14 National Fire Academy, and the Texas A&M University System 1-15 Engineering Extension Service; and 1-16 WHEREAS, In 1956, Mr. Corral began his long and impressive 1-17 career in public service as a fire fighter for the city of Houston; 1-18 following a series of promotions within the Houston Fire 1-19 Department, this valued employee was assigned to the office of 1-20 Houston Mayor Louie Welch where he implemented summer jobs and 1-21 recreation programs for Houston youths and, in 1973, returned to 1-22 the city's fire department to serve as chief inspector until 1981 1-23 when he was named to the post of fire marshal; and 1-24 WHEREAS, On March 25, 1992, Houston Mayor Bob Lanier 2-1 appointed Mr. Corral to serve as fire chief for the city of 2-2 Houston; the first Hispanic ever named to this position, Mr. Corral 2-3 is widely admired throughout Texas and the United States for his 2-4 ambitious new approaches to fire safety and prevention, such as his 2-5 participation in public speaking tours, the preparation of 2-6 multimedia presentations, and development of the Juvenile 2-7 Firesetters Prevention Program; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Acutely aware of the changing needs of society 2-9 today, he hopes to make fire prevention and education a top 2-10 priority of our nation's fire departments, as he strongly believes 2-11 that "fire prevention is the key to fire protection"; and 2-12 WHEREAS, This highly respected fire chief has been honored by 2-13 a host of dignitaries, including President George Bush, President 2-14 Ronald Reagan, Governor William P. Clements, Jr., and Governor 2-15 Dolph Briscoe; he also has won accolades from the Mexican-American 2-16 Bar Association of Houston and the Texas Advisory Council on Arson; 2-17 and 2-18 WHEREAS, An executive board member of the Fire Marshal's 2-19 Association of North America, Mr. Corral plays an active role in 2-20 the State Firemen and Fire Marshal's Association of Texas, the 2-21 National Fire Protection Association, and the International 2-22 Association of Fire Chiefs; in addition to these numerous 2-23 professional affiliations, this exemplary public servant has worked 2-24 closely with the U.S. Fire Administration, Federal Emergency 2-25 Management Agency, and National Legislative Conference on Arson; 2-26 and 2-27 WHEREAS, Devoted to making Houston a better city in which to 3-1 work and live, Mr. Corral is a volunteer for the Houston 3-2 International Festival, a past president of the Central Optimist 3-3 Club, a charter member of the Fiestas Patrias Committee, and a 3-4 district chairman of the Boy Scouts of America, Sam Houston 3-5 Chapter; moreover, he serves on the board of directors of the 3-6 Houston-Galveston Area Council, the Greater Houston Human Resources 3-7 program, and the Escape Center's child abuse prevention study; and 3-8 WHEREAS, Despite these many professional and community 3-9 endeavors, this fine Texan is above all else a devoted husband and 3-10 father who enjoys a rewarding marriage with Rima, his wife of more 3-11 than 30 years, and who takes great pride in the accomplishments of 3-12 his two sons, Robert and Eddie, Jr.; and 3-13 WHEREAS, To every one of his many roles, Mr. Corral brings 3-14 compassion and intelligence, creativity and innovation; his many 3-15 years of distinguished service to the city of Houston and to his 3-16 profession are indeed worthy of special legislative recognition; 3-17 now, therefore, be it 3-18 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 3-19 Legislature hereby commend Edward Anthony "Eddie" Corral on his 3-20 outstanding professional and civic achievements; and, be it further 3-21 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-22 prepared for Mr. Corral as an expression of high regard by the 3-23 Texas House of Representatives. 3-24 prepared for Mr. Corral as an expression of high regard by the 3-25 Texas House of Representatives. 3-26 Gallegos 3-27 H.R.
