R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Jamila Aziza Roos was formally presented to society
1-2 as a Cotillion Idlewild Debutante at the Cotillion Idlewild Club
1-3 Debutante Presentation on November 27, 1992, and to her many
1-4 friends and family members, her participation in this grand and
1-5 long-standing tradition was indeed a joyous occasion worthy of
1-6 special recognition; and
1-7 WHEREAS, The theme of the 1992 ball was "Evening Masquerade,"
1-8 and those in attendance were treated to a truly magical evening of
1-9 music and dance; the highlight of the event was the presentation of
1-10 the five lovely, talented, and ambitious young ladies selected as
1-11 Cotillion Idlewild Debutantes; and
1-12 WHEREAS, The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest E. Roos III,
1-13 Miss Roos is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Neely and
1-14 Mr. and Mrs. Ernest E. Roos, Jr.; and
1-15 WHEREAS, A sophomore at Harvard-Radcliffe University in
1-16 Cambridge, Massachusetts, this delightful young woman is majoring
1-17 in government with the goal of eventually serving her nation in a
1-18 diplomatic post, and her diligent work in this field resulted in
1-19 her inclusion on the Dean's List during her first two semesters;
1-20 she also is studying voice, and she hopes to parlay her interest in
1-21 music into a successful career as an opera singer; and
1-22 WHEREAS, Miss Roos is involved with numerous student
1-23 activities, including the Harvard Foundation for International and
1-24 Race Relations, the Association of Black Radcliffe Women, Radcliffe
2-1 Union of Students, and the Harvard Society of Black Scientists and
2-2 Engineers; this talented singer also found time to hone her musical
2-3 skills while performing in the Lowell House Opera's production of
2-4 The Magic Flute and while performing with Harvard's most selective
2-5 choir, Collegium Musicum; and
2-6 WHEREAS, An accomplished performer even before she entered
2-7 college, Miss Roos also has the honor of being the recipient of one
2-8 of the largest grants ever given by the Radcliffe Office of the
2-9 Arts; she won numerous awards while performing with her school and
2-10 church choirs, appeared in movies and commercials, and worked as a
2-11 fashion model, all while she was still in high school; and
2-12 WHEREAS, Although her studies and her music keep her quite
2-13 busy, this remarkable young lady still finds time to devote to
2-14 community service; she has served as a tutor for a Boston
2-15 inner-city youth, volunteered as a vocalist and flautist, and
2-16 prepared food for several fine organizations that minister to those
2-17 in need; and
2-18 WHEREAS, These many activities leave her little leisure time
2-19 but, when she does have some time for herself, Miss Roos enjoys
2-20 cooking, reading, and playing tennis; she has also travelled
2-21 extensively throughout the East Coast, Florida, Louisiana, and
2-22 Mexico, and this travel has helped her to become a well-rounded and
2-23 sophisticated individual; and
2-24 WHEREAS, Jamila Aziza Roos is a source of great pride and joy
2-25 to her parents, her community, and her many friends; her high
2-26 standards of academic achievement, social grace, and community
2-27 involvement make her a true embodiment of the Cotillion Idlewild
3-1 Debutante, and she is indeed worthy of praise and recognition; now,
3-2 therefore, be it
3-3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
3-4 Legislature hereby congratulate Jamila Aziza Roos on her
3-5 presentation as a Cotillion Idlewild Debutante and extend to her
3-6 warmest best wishes for many more years of continued success and
3-7 happiness; and, be it further
3-8 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-9 forwarded to Miss Roos as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3-10 House of Representatives.
