                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor
    1-2  Johnnie Upsher Goodman, an esteemed resident of Arlington, on the
    1-3  joyous occasion of his 70th birthday; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, A native Texan, he was born on Valentine's Day 1923
    1-5  in the community of Goodlet in Hardeman County and was the seventh
    1-6  child born to William "Tom" Goodman and Nettie Virginia Russell
    1-7  Goodman; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, At the age of 19, this patriotic gentleman enlisted
    1-9  in the United States Coast Guard in September 1942 and went on to
   1-10  join the United States Navy and proudly serve his country aboard
   1-11  the U.S. Gulf Port PS20 during World War II; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, During his tour of duty, the U.S. Gulf Port PS20
   1-13  earned a presidential citation for bravery and Mr. Goodman was
   1-14  decorated with the prestigious U.S. Navy Life Saver Medal; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, Continuing his distinguished service to his country,
   1-16  Mr. Goodman once again answered his nation's call to arms and
   1-17  served as a member of the United States Navy during the Korean
   1-18  Conflict; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, On June 1, 1947, Mr. Goodman took as his bride the
   1-20  former Opal Esterline "Dobbie Jean" Johnson, beginning an
   1-21  exceptionally happy and rewarding marriage that would be blessed by
   1-22  the birth of five devoted children:  our distinguished colleague,
   1-23  the Honorable Toby Goodman, Gary Goodman, Kirby Joe Goodman,
   1-24  Michael Jon Goodman, and Deirdre Darlene Chappell; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, In recent years, his close-knit family has continued
    2-2  to grow and Mr. Goodman now enjoys the love and affection of 11
    2-3  grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, In all aspects of his life, Mr. Goodman has
    2-5  exemplified the highest standards of excellence, dedication, and
    2-6  commitment to others; on the occasion of his birthday, it is indeed
    2-7  fitting that he be honored for his many outstanding contributions
    2-8  to his family, community, state, and nation; now, therefore, be it
    2-9        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-10  Legislature hereby honor Johnnie Upsher Goodman and extend warmest
   2-11  best wishes to this outstanding Texan on the occasion of his 70th
   2-12  birthday; and, be it further
   2-13        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-14  prepared for Mr. Goodman as an expression of highest regard by the
   2-15  Texas House of Representatives.
