No. 246 73R4033 BNL-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Dr. Bruce Hay recently retired from the medical 1-2 profession after 60 years of dedicated service, during which time 1-3 he treated countless West Texas patients and saved numerous lives; 1-4 and 1-5 WHEREAS, A resident of Pecos since 1946, this esteemed 1-6 physician was born on August 30, 1907, in Auburn, Nebraska; he was 1-7 graduated from Lincoln High School in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1925 1-8 and went on to medical school at the University of Nebraska in 1-9 Omaha, earning his medical degree in 1932; and 1-10 WHEREAS, He completed his five-year residency at Parkland 1-11 Memorial Hospital in Dallas before returning to Nebraska, where he 1-12 practiced medicine for two years; he then returned to Dallas, and 1-13 it was there that he met and fell in love with the beautiful Jane 1-14 Mitchell Pendleton; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Dr. Hay and Ms. Pendleton were married in Wichita 1-16 Falls on June 6, 1941; soon after, Dr. Hay was called away to serve 1-17 his country as a medical officer in the U.S. Army during World War 1-18 II, and after completing his European tour of duty in 1946, he and 1-19 his wife settled in Pecos; and 1-20 WHEREAS, This respected gentleman began his Pecos practice in 1-21 association with Dr. Jim Camp; Dr. Hay, who was one of the original 1-22 doctors at Reeves County Hospital when it opened in 1954, treated 1-23 patients at that hospital for nearly four decades until his recent 1-24 retirement, and he maintains his association with the hospital as 2-1 an honorary member of the medical staff; and 2-2 WHEREAS, A former chief of staff for the hospital, Dr. Hay 2-3 served on the board of directors at various times from 1954 to 2-4 1988, and his wife also was well known and respected for her 2-5 contributions to Reeves County Hospital; in 1955, this fine woman 2-6 established, and served as president of, the hospital's first 2-7 volunteer ladies' auxiliary, and she continued her work with that 2-8 noble organization for many years; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Dr. Hay also served as medical director at Pecos 2-10 Nursing Home for more than 15 years, but he did not limit his 2-11 community involvement to his medical practice; he was a prominent 2-12 member of the Pecos Rotary Club and the Pecos Valley Country Club 2-13 board; and 2-14 WHEREAS, His many friends and neighbors have honored Dr. Hay 2-15 on several occasions for his exceptional contributions to their 2-16 community; he was recognized as Citizen of the Year in 1982, and in 2-17 1986 nearly 200 people gathered to honor him as he began his 40th 2-18 year of practicing medicine in Pecos; and 2-19 WHEREAS, Throughout his 60 years as a practitioner of the 2-20 healing arts, this selfless and untiring physician has witnessed 2-21 many remarkable advances in the medical field, from the development 2-22 of antibiotics to pioneering techniques in organ transplant and 2-23 microsurgery; but as the medical field became more technically 2-24 advanced, Dr. Hay adhered to one old-fashioned, time-honored 2-25 principle: a doctor must understand the needs of each individual 2-26 patient and treat the whole person, not just the symptoms; and 2-27 WHEREAS, This caring and distinguished gentleman has provided 3-1 the residents of West Texas with medical care for the past 46 3-2 years, and his long-lasting commitment to the health and welfare of 3-3 his fellow Texans exemplifies the highest ideals and values of the 3-4 medical profession; an esteemed physician, neighbor, and friend, 3-5 Dr. Hay is a beloved member of the Pecos community, and his 3-6 tremendous efforts are truly worthy of highest legislative 3-7 recognition; now, therefore, be it 3-8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 3-9 Legislature hereby honor Dr. Bruce Hay for his many years of 3-10 outstanding medical service to the people of this state and extend 3-11 to him warmest best wishes for many more years of continued success 3-12 and happiness; and, be it further 3-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-14 prepared for Dr. Hay as an expression of high regard by the Texas 3-15 House of Representatives.
