R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The recent passing of Sterling City resident Chesley
1-2 McDonald on January 15, 1993, at the age of 74, has brought a
1-3 profound loss to the many friends and relatives of this
1-4 distinguished Texan; and
1-5 WHEREAS, Born in Magnolia, Mr. McDonald began his lifelong
1-6 affiliation with Abilene Christian University as a student,
1-7 athlete, and campus leader; president of the "A" Club men's honor
1-8 fraternity and a member of Who's Who Among Students in American
1-9 Universities and Colleges, he played halfback on the school's
1-10 football team, lettering three times, and served as class
1-11 president; and
1-12 WHEREAS, For more than half a century, this exemplary
1-13 gentleman continued to make valuable contributions to Abilene
1-14 Christian University as a member of the university's board of
1-15 trustees, board of development, and National Development Council;
1-16 Mr. McDonald received the Alumni Citation and Outstanding Alumnus
1-17 of the Year awards and, in 1990, was honored with the prestigious
1-18 Lifetime Achievement Award and admission into the university's
1-19 Sports Hall of Fame; and
1-20 WHEREAS, Dedicated to his state and country as well, this
1-21 patriotic American answered his nation's call to arms during World
1-22 War II and served with the U.S. Army for more than four years; on
1-23 his return to Texas, he coached in Anson and Colorado City and then
1-24 moved to Sterling City to serve as a football coach and high school
2-1 principal; and
2-2 WHEREAS, With the support of his lovely wife, Cecile,
2-3 Mr. McDonald embarked on a successful career in ranching; the
2-4 McDonald family ranch, a vast expanse covering five counties,
2-5 gained widespread acclaim for its fine quality Hereford cattle and
2-6 Rambouillet sheep; and
2-7 WHEREAS, In recognition of the family's strong commitment to
2-8 each other and to their community, Sterling City named the
2-9 McDonalds the Outstanding Family of the Year for 1970; and
2-10 WHEREAS, Highly respected in the ranching industry,
2-11 Mr. McDonald was a permanent member of the Sterling City Livestock
2-12 Show Association, chairman of the County Agriculture Service
2-13 Committee, and an honorary member of the Texas Hereford Association
2-14 and the Texas Future Farmers of America; and
2-15 WHEREAS, Despite his many community and business endeavors,
2-16 Mr. McDonald was above all else a devoted husband and family man
2-17 who enjoyed a happy and rewarding marriage with Cecile and who took
2-18 great pride in the accomplishments of his three children, Don,
2-19 Celia, and Jeanie, and his eight beloved grandchildren, Jena, Will,
2-20 Wesley, Heath, Hayley, Greg, Kevin, and Nicole; and
2-21 WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to know this fine Texan
2-22 will not quickly forget the warmth, generosity, and commitment he
2-23 brought to every facet of his life; though his presence is gone
2-24 from us now, his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of
2-25 all whose lives he touched during his years on this earth; now,
2-26 therefore, be it
2-27 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
3-1 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Chesley McDonald and
3-2 extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
3-3 Cecile McDonald of Sterling City; to his son, Dr. Don R. McDonald
3-4 of Salado; to his daughters, Celia Davis of Abilene and Jeanie Bird
3-5 of San Angelo; to his grandchildren, Greg McDonald of Dallas, Kevin
3-6 McDonald of Houston, Nicole McDonald of College Station, and Heath
3-7 Hughes, Will Davis, Wesley Davis, Jena Allen, and Hayley Mason, all
3-8 of Abilene; to his brothers, Orville McDonald of Dallas and J. T.
3-9 McDonald of Little Rock, Arkansas; to his sisters, Violet Irwin of
3-10 Everman and Mildred Rice of Baytown; and to his many other friends
3-11 and relatives; and, be it further
3-12 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
3-13 for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of
3-14 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Chesley
3-15 McDonald.
