R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Dr. William David "Bill" Pittman, a prominent
1-2 community leader of Mexia, died on December 21, 1992, at the age of
1-3 63; though the passing of this esteemed gentleman is a sad
1-4 occasion, he will be fondly remembered as a dedicated servant of
1-5 family, church, community, and nation; and
1-6 WHEREAS, A native Texan, he was born on February 9, 1929, in
1-7 Mexia and remained a lifelong resident of this dynamic East Texas
1-8 community; as a soldier in the United States Army during the Korean
1-9 War, he developed within himself the qualities of leadership that
1-10 served to direct him throughout his career and that ultimately
1-11 influenced the many professional and social organizations he would
1-12 go on to lead; and
1-13 WHEREAS, Over the years, Dr. Pittman contributed his
1-14 leadership to serve as president of the Mexia Chamber of Commerce,
1-15 the Rotary Club, the Jaycees, the Texas Optometric Association, and
1-16 the Southwest Council of Optometry; he also was an active member of
1-17 the American Optometric Association and the First Baptist Church of
1-18 Mexia, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and a deacon; and
1-19 WHEREAS, Through his civic work, Dr. Pittman positively
1-20 influenced the lives of countless numbers of individuals; a former
1-21 mayor and city commissioner of Mexia, this admirable gentleman
1-22 continually worked to improve his community for the benefit of his
1-23 contemporaries and generations to follow; and
1-24 WHEREAS, Highly regarded for his professional achievements as
2-1 well, he was honored for his outstanding contributions to the field
2-2 of optometry when he was named "Optometrist of the Year" in 1987;
2-3 and
2-4 WHEREAS, Dr. Pittman was a man of rare dedication and warmth
2-5 who touched the lives of many people during his years on this
2-6 earth, and his memory will long endure in the hearts of all who
2-7 were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it
2-8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
2-9 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. William David
2-10 "Bill" Pittman and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of his
2-11 family: to his wife, Patsy Coffman Pittman of Mexia; to his son,
2-12 Wesley E. Pittman of Mexia; to his daughter, Laurie Hurst of
2-13 Nacogdoches; to his sister, Mary Emma Montgomery of Tucson,
2-14 Arizona; to his four beloved grandchildren; and to the many other
2-15 friends and relatives of this fine man; and, be it further
2-16 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
2-17 for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of
2-18 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr.
2-19 William David "Bill" Pittman.
