R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Since it achieved four-year university status in
1-2 1975, when it began admitting freshman and sophomore students, The
1-3 University of Texas at Dallas has attained a reputation as one of
1-4 the state's premier institutions of higher learning and has
1-5 attracted some of the finest students in the state with its
1-6 outstanding array of challenging and demanding academic programs;
1-7 and
1-8 WHEREAS, The high caliber of students enrolled at the
1-9 university and the high standards of achievement they have
1-10 established have added to the school's reputation and increased its
1-11 attractiveness for students with the talent and ambition to succeed
1-12 in the university's rigorous academic climate; and
1-13 WHEREAS, This correlation between the school's high standards
1-14 of academic achievement and its appeal to bright and ambitious
1-15 students was borne out again in the fall of 1992 when, for the
1-16 third year in a row, The University of Texas at Dallas recruited a
1-17 freshman class ranking at the top of those entering a public
1-18 university in the state; and
1-19 WHEREAS, Numbering 118 students in all, this outstanding
1-20 freshman class attained an average SAT score of 1,112 and an
1-21 average ACT score above 26; collectively, these students ranked in
1-22 the top 16 percent of their high school graduating classes; and
1-23 WHEREAS, In addition to bringing an outstanding track record
1-24 of academic performance to add to the university's already great
2-1 reputation, this freshman class has provided an added dimension of
2-2 diversity to broaden the social and cultural horizons for all of
2-3 the university's scholastic population; and
2-4 WHEREAS, Possessing a high degree of youthful energy and
2-5 bringing to The University of Texas at Dallas a wide array of
2-6 personal and professional interests, this class has become a
2-7 positive force in campus life and has reenergized a variety of
2-8 university functions; and
2-9 WHEREAS, The energy and multicultural diversity these
2-10 students have brought to the campus is particularly evident in the
2-11 significant role they have played in making the Annual Minority
2-12 Student Leadership Conference, International Day activities, and
2-13 other campus outreach programs resound with success; and
2-14 WHEREAS, Recognizing that these students represent the future
2-15 of this state, the members of this body take great pleasure in
2-16 noting both the superior accomplishments of this remarkable group
2-17 of students and the tremendous potential for future success
2-18 inherent in their collective performance to date; now, therefore,
2-19 be it
2-20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
2-21 Legislature hereby commend the freshman class of The University of
2-22 Texas at Dallas on its outstanding record of academic achievement
2-23 and extend to all of its members best wishes for continued success
2-24 throughout their collegiate careers and beyond; and, be it further
2-25 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-26 prepared for the members of this freshman class as an expression of
2-27 high esteem by the Texas House of Representatives.
