H.R. No. 311 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Since its establishment in the 1840s, the beautiful 1-2 city of Copperas Cove has significantly contributed to the state's 1-3 unique history with its rich and colorful past, and the hardy 1-4 pioneers who settled the area would indeed be proud of its 1-5 tremendous growth and progress since that time; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Ogletree Gap Valley, about two miles west of town, 1-7 is the original townsite of Copperas Cove; the natural basin, 1-8 protected by the five surrounding hills, was used primarily as a 1-9 stopover for cattle drives heading east toward the Chisholm Trail; 1-10 and 1-11 WHEREAS, One of the area's earliest settlers was Marsden 1-12 Ogletree, who migrated to Texas from Georgia with his family in 1-13 1878 and built a family home that also served as a grain store and 1-14 a stopping place for the Lampasas to Belton stagecoach; since the 1-15 mail arrived by stagecoach, a post office was opened in the 1-16 location the following year and Mr. Ogletree became its first 1-17 postmaster; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Named for a "copperas-tasting" spring in the cove of 1-19 a nearby mountain, the thriving community shifted to its present 1-20 location with the coming of the Santa Fe Railway, and the area soon 1-21 became a shipping point for cattle and cotton; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Copperas Cove remained a small community until 1-23 construction began at what was then known as Camp Hood in 1942, and 1-24 today the city enjoys a multicultural and forward-looking 2-1 population of nearly 25,000 residents; and 2-2 WHEREAS, The city of Copperas Cove, which has continued to 2-3 maintain its progressive Western spirit and healthy business 2-4 climate, also has become well known for offering an abundance of 2-5 recreational facilities at its 88-acre park as well as excellent 2-6 educational opportunities at Central Texas College and the 2-7 University of Central Texas; and 2-8 WHEREAS, The citizens of this innovative and modern community 2-9 have made Copperas Cove a town that still takes pride in 2-10 traditional values and a high quality of life, and their 2-11 accomplishments merit the commendation of the Texas House of 2-12 Representatives; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-14 Legislature hereby recognize Tuesday, February 23, 1993, as 2-15 "Copperas Cove Day" at the State Capitol, welcome the proud 2-16 residents of Copperas Cove on their visit to Austin, and commend 2-17 them for their exemplary achievement in building one of Texas' 2-18 finest communities. 2-19 finest communities. 2-20 Place 2-21 H.R.
