No. 328 73R5278 SDU-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The people of the city of Harlingen are justifiably 1-2 proud of their new public library, which opened on February 15, 1-3 1993; and 1-4 WHEREAS, In 1990, recognizing the vital importance of an 1-5 adequate, modern public library to their city, Harlingen voters 1-6 approved a "quality of life" bond issue that expressly allocated 1-7 funds for the construction of a new facility; and 1-8 WHEREAS, The Harlingen Public Library is now located on 1-9 Seventh Street at 410 76 Drive, in an attractive two-story building 1-10 designed by architects Rick Labunski of Harlingen and Bill Hidell 1-11 of Dallas; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The library is graced with Spanish arches, rose 1-13 stucco, and teal moulding, and its 45,000-square-foot interior not 1-14 only can accommodate a projected collection of 96,000 books, but 1-15 features a computerized catalog, conference rooms, a computer lab, 1-16 a separate area for children, and a 200-seat auditorium; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Harlingen Mayor Bill Card articulated the sentiments 1-18 of his fellow townspeople when he declared, "You can't have a fine 1-19 city unless you have a fine library," and his vision and tireless 1-20 efforts on behalf of the facility have played a vital role in 1-21 making the dream of a new library a reality; and 1-22 WHEREAS, The new Harlingen Public Library will offer 1-23 entertainment and educational opportunities to area citizens while 1-24 helping many young students develop a lifelong love of reading; 2-1 with its striking exterior, the facility stands today as a tangible 2-2 symbol of progress for all South Texans; now, therefore, be it 2-3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-4 Legislature hereby commend Mayor Bill Card and the citizens of 2-5 Harlingen on the completion of their city's new public library; 2-6 and, be it further 2-7 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-8 prepared for the Harlingen Public Library as an expression of high 2-9 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
