                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor
    1-2  the San Benito Independent School District and the sixth-grade
    1-3  faculty at Berta Cabaza Middle School for their determined efforts
    1-4  to educate students about the perils of drug abuse; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, The San Benito ISD recently launched an ambitious
    1-6  drug awareness program at the school that is designed to reach
    1-7  children at the age when they are particularly vulnerable to peer
    1-8  pressure; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, In an effort to demonstrate the pervasiveness of
   1-10  such pressure and the interconnectedness of drug abuse with crime
   1-11  and other social issues, every sixth-grade class at the school has
   1-12  incorporated the theme of drug-abuse prevention into its curriculum
   1-13  for the duration of the eight-week program; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Additionally, the program includes a lecture series
   1-15  featuring speakers who will serve as positive role models for the
   1-16  students by stressing respect for laws and rules prohibiting drug
   1-17  abuse, fostering students' feelings of self-worth, and educating
   1-18  students regarding the advantages of a healthy, drug-free
   1-19  lifestyle; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, The school's sixth-grade students have responded
   1-21  enthusiastically to the program, and its success is a tribute to
   1-22  the dedication and hard work of the Berta Cabaza Middle School
   1-23  staff:  principal Jose Gonzalez, sixth-grade counselor Sulema
   1-24  Rodriguez, and teachers Marlena Cervantes, Pete De La Rosa, Lucy
    2-1  Escobedo, Belinda Franco, Beatrice Garcia, Mary I. Gonzales, Tracy
    2-2  Jackel, Albie Lopez, Enedina Martinez, Pam Neeley, Alfredo Pesina,
    2-3  Thelma Sanchez, Janie Silva, Kathy Tamayo, and W. Pat Thorn; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, The school district's leadership in the fight
    2-5  against drugs has inspired the support of parents, teachers, and
    2-6  others in the community who share a common goal of eliminating
    2-7  substance abuse among young people; through exemplary efforts such
    2-8  as theirs, Texas schoolchildren may one day again be able to enjoy
    2-9  the peace and security of a drug-free environment; now, therefore,
   2-10  be it
   2-11        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-12  Legislature hereby commend the San Benito Independent School
   2-13  District and the faculty and students of Berta Cabaza Middle School
   2-14  for their exceptional drug-abuse prevention program and extend
   2-15  sincere best wishes to all who have worked to ensure the success of
   2-16  this valuable program; and, be it further
   2-17        RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
   2-18  for the school and faculty as an expression of high regard by the
   2-19  Texas House of Representatives.
