No. 331 73R5373 KMP-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor 1-2 Tom Joyner on the occasion of his retirement as morning disc jockey 1-3 at KKDA-FM in Dallas; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A graduate of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, 1-5 Mr. Joyner began his long and distinguished career in broadcasting 1-6 in 1970, when he joined a Montgomery, Alabama, radio station as a 1-7 morning news reporter; soon thereafter, his talent and 1-8 professionalism won him employment as a disc jockey at stations in 1-9 St. Louis, Memphis, and Dallas; and 1-10 WHEREAS, In 1976 this esteemed broadcaster worked as a media 1-11 relations specialist for boxing champion Muhammad Ali; Mr. Joyner 1-12 later hosted radio programs in Chicago until 1983, when he moved to 1-13 KKDA-FM in Dallas, and during these years, he won a loyal following 1-14 in two of the country's largest radio markets; and 1-15 WHEREAS, So much in demand was this popular radio personality 1-16 that two stations, Dallas's KKDA-FM and Chicago's WGCI-FM, offered 1-17 him lucrative multiyear contracts to host his own program at their 1-18 stations; overcoming seemingly insurmountable problems, Mr. Joyner 1-19 accepted both offers and began commuting more than 3,800 miles to 1-20 and from work each day; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Since October 1985, this indefatigable gentleman has 1-22 been the only disc jockey to have both a top-rated morning show in 1-23 one city and a top-rated afternoon show in another city; 1-24 Mr. Joyner's talent, hard work, and dedication to excellence have 2-1 won him the respect of his broadcasting colleagues around the 2-2 country; and 2-3 WHEREAS, In recognition of his many contributions to the 2-4 field of radio broadcasting, he received the Young Black 2-5 Programmers Coalition's Award of Excellence as well as the Joe 2-6 Loris Award for Excellence in Broadcasting; over the years, various 2-7 professional organizations have named him DJ of the Decade, 2-8 Personality of the Year, and Best Urban Contemporary Air 2-9 Personality; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Hoping to spend his newfound leisure time with his 2-11 family, Mr. Joyner enjoys a rewarding marriage with his wife of 21 2-12 years, Dora, and takes immense pride in the accomplishments of his 2-13 two sons; and 2-14 WHEREAS, This admirable gentleman is known to all as a 2-15 sincere, generous, and compassionate man, and his outstanding 2-16 contributions to radio broadcasting are indeed worthy of our 2-17 highest praise and recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-18 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-19 Legislature hereby honor Tom Joyner on his outstanding tenure as 2-20 the morning disc jockey at KKDA-FM and extend warmest best wishes 2-21 to him for continued happiness and success in his future endeavors; 2-22 and, be it further 2-23 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-24 prepared for Mr. Joyner as an expression of high esteem by the 2-25 Texas House of Representatives.
