R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, A cherished artery of trade that historically has
1-2 played an important role in the vital economic development of
1-3 Texas, Galveston Bay will be formally recognized for its
1-4 significance as an irreplaceable natural resource at this year's
1-5 Bay Day celebration at the historic Sylvan Beach park during the
1-6 official Galveston Bay Weekend, scheduled for June 12 and 13; and
1-7 WHEREAS, Providing access to the ports of Galveston, Houston,
1-8 and Texas City, Galveston Bay has served as a major center for the
1-9 distribution of goods from around the world and has contributed to
1-10 these warm coastal communities' continued growth and prosperity;
1-11 benefiting from the wealth funneling through this natural channel,
1-12 the entire bay area continues to thrive as a valuable cultural and
1-13 economic center; and
1-14 WHEREAS, Today, Galveston Bay remains a critically important
1-15 natural resource of tremendous value, providing a vast array of
1-16 commercial, recreational, and ecological benefits to all the
1-17 citizens of Texas and has been declared a Nationally Significant
1-18 Estuary by the United States Congress; and
1-19 WHEREAS, Tourists from all over the state and nation flock to
1-20 Galveston Bay, seeking both relaxation and excitement through the
1-21 many activities the water offers; whether fishing for any of the
1-22 area's common species, such as flounder, speckled trout, redfish,
1-23 croaker, tarpon, sheepshead, or catfish, or simply basking in the
1-24 warmth of the Texas sun by the water's edge, Texans recognize
2-1 Galveston Bay as a unique Texas treasure that must be treated with
2-2 care to preserve its charm and environmental integrity for
2-3 generations to come; now, therefore, be it
2-4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
2-5 Legislature hereby recognize June 12 and 13, 1993, as Galveston Bay
2-6 Weekend and formally acknowledge the significant contributions
2-7 Galveston Bay has made to the continued development and prosperity
2-8 of this state.
