                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, Jody Hawkins has given the athletic performance of
    1-2  her career, winning the River City 10-mile race in Austin and
    1-3  bettering her previous course record by an amazing 2 minutes and 38
    1-4  seconds; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Distance running is among the most demanding of
    1-6  sports, severely testing the athlete's physical and emotional
    1-7  mettle, and success is achieved by only the most determined
    1-8  competitors; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, A resident of Blooming Grove, Texas, the 26-year-old
   1-10  Ms. Hawkins posted an overall time of 51 minutes and 54 seconds,
   1-11  which was only 13 seconds short of the world record and is the
   1-12  third-fastest finish ever recorded in women's 10-mile competition;
   1-13  and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Ms. Hawkins, the former Jody Dunston, was the first
   1-15  Texas athlete to win titles in four consecutive state high school
   1-16  track and field meets, and her 10:50 in the 3,200-meter race in
   1-17  1983 still stands as the Class AA record; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, As a senior at The University of Texas-San Antonio
   1-19  in 1989, she posted the third-best time that year in the
   1-20  10,000-meter race at the Mt. SAC Relays in California, and only an
   1-21  injury has kept her from competing in the Olympic trials; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Her triumphant return to her sport has been greatly
   1-23  facilitated by the constant support of her husband, Mark Hawkins,
   1-24  also a distance runner; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, In addition to her grueling training regimen, this
    2-2  outstanding athlete also teaches physical education and coaches
    2-3  basketball in Italy, Texas; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, The superlative effort given by Jody Hawkins in her
    2-5  River City 10-mile victory was an inspiration to all athletes who
    2-6  strive for physical excellence, and it is indeed appropriate that
    2-7  this deserving woman receive special legislative recognition; now,
    2-8  therefore, be it
    2-9        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-10  Legislature hereby commend Jody Hawkins for her world-class
   2-11  performance and victory in the River City 10-mile run and extend to
   2-12  her best wishes for continued success in the future; and, be it
   2-13  further
   2-14        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-15  prepared for Jody Hawkins as an expression of high regard by the
   2-16  Texas House of Representatives.
