                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, With increasing regard for the economic and
    1-2  ecological importance of a clean and abundant water supply,
    1-3  residents of the Wichita Falls area have dedicated themselves to
    1-4  the protection and preservation of this significant natural
    1-5  resource, setting aside April 24, 1993, as "Clean Wichita River
    1-6  Day"; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, Contributing to Texas' integral web of scenic rivers
    1-8  and streams, the Wichita River flows through the north central
    1-9  region of the state, satisfying the human population, wildlife, and
   1-10  plants alike with its cool, life-giving water; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Named for the Native Americans who had made their
   1-12  homes along its banks, the Wichita River, with its spectacular
   1-13  falls and quenching waters, invited human habitation in the area;
   1-14  and
   1-15        WHEREAS, Dancing over rocks and bubbling with energy, the
   1-16  north, south, and middle forks of this vital river wind through
   1-17  sections of nine counties as they rush to empty their waters into
   1-18  the Red River; residents of Dickens, Cottle, King, Foard, Knox,
   1-19  Baylor, Archer, Wichita, and Clay counties rely on the Wichita
   1-20  River as an important source of water for drinking, irrigation, and
   1-21  recreational enjoyment; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Vacationers, seeking relief from Texas' intense
   1-23  summer sun, escape to cool, flowing waters and, in the process,
   1-24  generate substantial profits for river communities; indeed, with
    2-1  the growing popularity of river sports, such as canoeing, tubing,
    2-2  swimming, and rafting, it is more important than ever to carefully
    2-3  maintain the appeal of Texas rivers, keeping them safe for a wide
    2-4  range of uses; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Texans everywhere have an important role to play in
    2-6  the preservation of Texas waters for the use and enjoyment of
    2-7  generations to come; though the Wichita River is only a part of the
    2-8  grand network of Texas rivers, its health affects the entire
    2-9  ecosystem, and citizens of the Wichita Falls area are to be
   2-10  commended for their commitment to the protection of the flowing
   2-11  lifeblood of this state; now, therefore, be it
   2-12        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-13  Legislature hereby proclaim April 24, 1993, as "Clean Wichita River
   2-14  Day" and formally commend the participants for their vision and
   2-15  efforts to preserve the natural wonder and vitality of this
   2-16  important resource.
