H.R. No. 379
                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, Charlene Alsbrooks Purvis, one of Corrigan's most
    1-2  beloved citizens, died on March 2, 1992, at the age of 56, and her
    1-3  passing has profoundly saddened her family and her many friends
    1-4  throughout the Polk County community; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, A native and lifelong resident of Corrigan, where
    1-6  she was born on July 7, 1935, to Charlie and Doris Alsbrooks,
    1-7  Mrs. Purvis enjoyed throughout her life the love and respect of
    1-8  neighbors and friends in this southeast Texas town and involved
    1-9  herself with energy and enthusiasm in the life of the community;
   1-10  and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Mrs. Purvis graduated in 1953 from Corrigan High
   1-12  School, where she had been a popular student active in many clubs
   1-13  and extracurricular activities; she continued her education at the
   1-14  University of Houston-affiliated Lillie Jolly School of Nursing,
   1-15  and on receiving her degree in 1956, she returned to Corrigan and
   1-16  began a long and rewarding career attending to the health and
   1-17  welfare of others in the community; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, Employed by the Polk County School District from
   1-19  1956 to 1964 and by the Corrigan-Camden Independent School District
   1-20  from 1964 until her death in 1992, she was especially privileged to
   1-21  serve several generations of the community's schoolchildren during
   1-22  her exceptional 36-year career as a school nurse; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, In addition to caring for the thousands of students
   1-24  who attended the Corrigan-Camden schools during her tenure as the
    2-1  district's school nurse, Mrs. Purvis shared her abiding love of
    2-2  nursing and her professional expertise as an instructor in the
    2-3  School of Nursing at Angelina Junior College in Lufkin from 1989 to
    2-4  1992; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Mrs. Purvis was a consummate nurse, highly dedicated
    2-6  to the ideals of her profession and committed to the hard work and
    2-7  the long hours necessary to serve the people in her community; she
    2-8  also earned the respect and admiration of her peers for her
    2-9  valuable service as a member of several professional organizations,
   2-10  including the Texas School Nurse Administrators and the Texas
   2-11  Nursing Association, and for her significant contributions as a
   2-12  member of the board for the Polk County Hospital District; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, A devoted wife and mother as well as a school nurse,
   2-14  she placed the highest importance on the well-being of the children
   2-15  in the community, her own and those with whom she came in contact
   2-16  during the course of her daily routines, and she made every effort
   2-17  to ensure that she always had ample time for each and every child
   2-18  she met; and
   2-19        WHEREAS, Although children occupied a unique place in her
   2-20  heart, no one, young or old or healthy or infirm, who had a special
   2-21  need escaped her attention, and whether helping a youngster in the
   2-22  Corrigan Future Farmers of America or advocating the rights of the
   2-23  elderly as a member of the Corrigan chapter of the American
   2-24  Association of Retired Persons, she demonstrated her concern by
   2-25  acting to the utmost of her ability; and
   2-26        WHEREAS, Honored many times over by her peers, by civic
   2-27  leaders, and by the community during her lifetime of devoted
    3-1  service to others, this warm and compassionate individual was most
    3-2  appropriately rewarded for her efforts by the unstinting love she
    3-3  received from the countless people whose lives she touched; though
    3-4  her presence is gone from us now, she will live on in the cherished
    3-5  memories she leaves behind; now, therefore, be it
    3-6        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
    3-7  Legislature hereby honor the memory of Charlene Alsbrooks Purvis
    3-8  and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her family:  to her
    3-9  children, Lee Nan and Milt Purvis and daughter-in-law, Carla
   3-10  Purvis; to her mother, Doris Waldrep; to her sisters, Myra Rathburn
   3-11  and Molly Locke, and brother-in-law Jay M. Locke; to her nephews,
   3-12  Michael E. Lockhart, Charlie Jay Locke, and Billy Sam Locke; to her
   3-13  great-niece, Michelle Lockhart, and great-nephew, Charlie Jay Locke
   3-14  II; and to all of the people in the community who have mourned the
   3-15  loss of this exceptional individual; and, be it further
   3-16        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   3-17  prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas
   3-18  House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
   3-19  Charlene Alsbrooks Purvis.
