No. 380 73R6102 LBD-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, As winners of the Super Quiz at the 1993 State 1-2 Academic Decathlon, the young scholars representing San Antonio's 1-3 Highlands High School have achieved for their school and city 1-4 statewide recognition and praise; and 1-5 WHEREAS, In its eighth year of participation, the school's 1-6 decathlon team encountered, with this year's contest, its first 1-7 statewide scholastic battle of wits; after three days of intense 1-8 competition in a variety of challenging categories, including 1-9 economics, fine arts, language, literature, math, science, and 1-10 social science, Highlands students walked away the champions of the 1-11 Super Quiz, the most highlighted of the academic decathlon events; 1-12 and 1-13 WHEREAS, In this category, knowledge and sound reasoning were 1-14 essential as members of each team were required to answer five 1-15 questions regarding the topic, "A Diversity of Achievers"; vying 1-16 against some of Texas' finest schools from around the state, 1-17 Highlands students scored 28 out of a possible 30 points, defeating 1-18 the highly regarded Plano East High School students who followed 1-19 closely with a score of 27; and 1-20 WHEREAS, United in purpose and ambition, this outstanding 1-21 group of students prepared extensively for the rigors of this 1-22 difficult competition, and their efforts resulted in the attainment 1-23 of a remarkable goal; with dedication and hard work, they have 1-24 achieved a special honor that testifies to their intelligence and 2-1 abilities as well as to their parents' and instructors' commitment 2-2 to educational excellence; and 2-3 WHEREAS, With steadfast devotion to the success of her team, 2-4 coach Jan Archer led the following team members to victory: Felix 2-5 Aguirre, Brandi Barrett, Christopher Coronado, Maricela Martinez, 2-6 Ryan Robinson, Jerry Svec, Cathy Anderson, Christopher Davis, and 2-7 Sandra Sifuentes; together, these students and their coach have 2-8 distinguished their school as a fine institution of learning, and 2-9 they are indeed worthy of special legislative recognition for their 2-10 exceptional accomplishment; now, therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-12 Legislature hereby commend the members of the Highlands High School 2-13 academic decathlon team for their superb performance as winners in 2-14 the Super Quiz competition at the 1993 State Academic Decathlon; 2-15 and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared 2-17 for the members of the team and for prominent display at Highlands 2-18 High School as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of 2-19 Representatives.
