R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The city of Fort Worth has lost one of its most
1-2 valued citizens and esteemed civic leaders with the passing of
1-3 Gilbert Garcia on March 2, 1993, at the age of 74; and
1-4 WHEREAS, A native of Brownsville, Mr. Garcia was a resident
1-5 of Fort Worth for the past 47 years, during which time he traveled
1-6 extensively throughout Texas working in behalf of the state's
1-7 Hispanic residents; and
1-8 WHEREAS, This fine gentleman was committed to the betterment
1-9 of his community and helped to form the first Mexican-American
1-10 Chamber of Commerce as well as the League of United Latin American
1-11 Citizens Council 601, the Chicano Luncheon, the Fort Worth Chapter
1-12 of the American GI Forum, and the Lucky 13 social club; and
1-13 WHEREAS, A recipient of a Pearl Harbor Commemorative Medal
1-14 for his distinguished military service, Mr. Garcia worked
1-15 diligently in behalf of Hispanic war veterans in Fort Worth and
1-16 across the state in the 1940s when it was unpopular to do so,
1-17 educating the community about their rights and how to better
1-18 address their needs; and
1-19 WHEREAS, For the past nine years, he served as the publisher
1-20 of the Hispanic Business Directory and shared his valuable insight
1-21 and expertise with others as a valued member of the Private
1-22 Industry Council; and
1-23 WHEREAS, Dedicated to helping the youth of his community as
1-24 well, Mr. Garcia also gave generously of his leisure time to tutor
2-1 Hispanic youths and to serve as a Boy Scout troop leader; and
2-2 WHEREAS, Mr. Garcia contributed to his community in countless
2-3 ways, and he was honored for his outstanding service when he was
2-4 named the recipient of Hispanic of the '90s award and the Hispanic
2-5 Salute award; and
2-6 WHEREAS, In all aspects of his life, Gilbert Garcia
2-7 demonstrated unfailing optimism, integrity, and dedication to that
2-8 which he knew to be right; though his presence will be deeply
2-9 missed by all who were privileged to know him, the memory of this
2-10 remarkable gentleman will continue to live on in the many
2-11 accomplishments he leaves behind; now, therefore, be it
2-12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
2-13 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Gilbert Garcia and
2-14 extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family: to his
2-15 wife, Herlinda Garcia; to his son, Gilbert C. Garcia, Jr.; to his
2-16 brothers, Guadalupe Garcia and Alfredo Garcia; to his sister,
2-17 Angelica Garza; and to his four beloved grandchildren; and, be it
2-18 further
2-19 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-20 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-21 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-22 Gilbert Garcia.
