                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, St. Patrick's Day 1993 is the 47th birthday of our
    1-2  esteemed colleague, the Honorable Ashley Smith, a birthdate that
    1-3  may help to explain his uncanny ability to get lucky in the house
    1-4  with his legislative proposals; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, This legislative leprechaun is currently serving his
    1-6  seventh term as a member of this distinguished chamber; when he is
    1-7  not in Austin performing his governmental duties, Mr. Smith can be
    1-8  found in Houston, where he could be construed as having some
    1-9  interest in looking for a pot of gold in his role as an attorney
   1-10  with the law firm of Crain, Caton and James and in his pursuit of
   1-11  an L.L.M. degree in international law; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Blessed with a loving wife, Peggy, and an
   1-13  accomplished daughter, Marlo, Mr. Smith would appear to lead a
   1-14  charmed existence, though lately he seems to be suffering a bit
   1-15  from the empty nest syndrome since "that girl" left the Lone Star
   1-16  State to pursue her studies at Vanderbilt University; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Despite his first name, there is absolutely no truth
   1-18  to the rumor that Mr. Smith's countenance has appeared on a
   1-19  Franklin Mint plate, and any notion that he frankly doesn't give a
   1-20  darn would be quickly gone with the wind after witnessing his
   1-21  impressive involvement as chairman of the Committee on Higher
   1-22  Education and as a valued member of the committees on public safety
   1-23  and redistricting; and
   1-24        WHEREAS, This outstanding legislator has of late attempted to
    2-1  encourage a stronger linkage between education and science and
    2-2  technology; however, his colleagues regret to inform him that the
    2-3  concept of sending students into orbit to help them achieve a
    2-4  higher education is rather impractical; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Though he's not getting any younger, Representative
    2-6  Smith does seem to have a handle on how to age gracefully into his
    2-7  golden years, which may account for his colleagues' undeniable need
    2-8  to give him some blarney on the anniversary of his birth; now,
    2-9  therefore, be it
   2-10        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-11  Legislature hereby congratulate the Honorable Ashley Smith on the
   2-12  unavoidable occasion of his 47th birthday and extend sincere best
   2-13  wishes to him for many more years of good-natured teasing at the
   2-14  hands of his tasteful peers; and, be it further
   2-15        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-16  prepared for Mr. Smith as an expression of malarkey by his
   2-17  colleagues in the Texas House of Representatives.
