H.R. No. 424
                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The students, parents, faculty, and staff of South
    1-2  Knoll Elementary School, in the College Station Independent School
    1-3  District, are to be commended for earning the Outstanding Campus
    1-4  Volunteer Award for small districts in Texas; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, This prestigious award was presented by the Texas
    1-6  Association for Partners in Education in recognition of the success
    1-7  of the school's volunteer program that was judged best among the
    1-8  state's 979 school districts that have fewer than 10,000 students;
    1-9  and
   1-10        WHEREAS, South Knoll's program was launched in 1986 with 14
   1-11  volunteers who contributed 500 hours of service; last year, 337
   1-12  volunteers contributed 9,525 hours of service, and by the end of
   1-13  the 1992 fall semester, approximately 300 volunteers had already
   1-14  contributed 6,500 hours; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, Program volunteers include parents, business people,
   1-16  retirees, and professors and students from Texas A&M University,
   1-17  representing the full spectrum of the Bryan-College   Station
   1-18  community at its best; giving unstintingly of their time, energy,
   1-19  and expertise, they provide needed guidance to South Knoll
   1-20  schoolchildren as Big Brothers and Big Sisters, make classroom
   1-21  presentations on subjects as varied as bats, astronomy, geography,
   1-22  and drug abuse, and provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring;
   1-23  and
   1-24        WHEREAS, In an effort to promote money-management skills
    2-1  First City, Texas--Bryan/College Station initiated a school savings
    2-2  project in which volunteers helped children deposit money into
    2-3  accounts using computer stations on campus; the project was so well
    2-4  received that the school and the bank were invited to present it at
    2-5  the Texas School Volunteer Conference in April 1992; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, The outstanding success of the South Knoll program
    2-7  is a testament to the efforts of many dedicated individuals,
    2-8  including Becky Eden, the campus's representative to the district
    2-9  volunteer advisory board, parent coordinators Cindy Skinner, Cheryl
   2-10  Anderholm, and Ranga Parasuraman, South Knoll Principal Brad
   2-11  Lancaster, and other members of the community who share their time
   2-12  and interests with these children so that they can look forward to
   2-13  a future bright with promise; and
   2-14        WHEREAS, Since its inception, the South Knoll volunteer
   2-15  program has enriched the lives of hundreds of children and adults,
   2-16  and it is indeed appropriate that the program be recognized for its
   2-17  continuing contributions in this regard; now, therefore, be it
   2-18        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-19  Legislature hereby commend the students, parents, faculty, and
   2-20  staff of South Knoll Elementary School on receiving the Outstanding
   2-21  Campus Volunteer Award for small districts from the Texas
   2-22  Association for Partners in Education and extend to the school
   2-23  sincere best wishes for continued success in the future; and, be it
   2-24  further
   2-25        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-26  prepared for prominent display at South Knoll Elementary School as
   2-27  an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
