                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The recent death of the Reverend G. G. Grant on
    1-2  March 10, 1993, at the age of 86 has brought great sadness to the
    1-3  many friends and relatives of this esteemed pastor of the Mount
    1-4  Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Houston; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Born to Felix and Cora Grant on July 11, 1906, in
    1-6  Bellville, this remarkable clergyman was raised in this small city
    1-7  in Austin County and later attended Conroe College; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, At an early age, he professed his religious faith at
    1-9  the Hill Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of the Reverend
   1-10  S. P. Baker and answered his evangelical calling in 1925, entering
   1-11  the preaching ministry when he was just 19 years old; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, In 1939, Reverend Grant realized another important
   1-13  milestone when he married the former Gracie Lee Calhoun, beginning
   1-14  a lifetime of loving cooperation that would endure for more than
   1-15  half a century; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, A talented and inspirational speaker, Reverend Grant
   1-17  provided spiritual direction and unfailing leadership to the
   1-18  members of the Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church for nearly
   1-19  five decades and through the years helped to guide the congregation
   1-20  as it grew from having just seven members to the more than 800
   1-21  faithful followers who worship at this outstanding church today;
   1-22  and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Hardworking and dedicated to the welfare of others,
   1-24  Reverend Grant made a positive difference in the lives of the
    2-1  members of his church and community, earning the abiding respect
    2-2  and admiration of all those he came to know; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, Described by others as gracious, gifted, and noble,
    2-4  Reverend Grant touched the lives of many people throughout his full
    2-5  and generous life and made numerous lasting contributions to the
    2-6  spiritual life of his community; although he is gone from us now,
    2-7  his thoughtful words and compassionate ways will always flourish
    2-8  and his memory will continue to serve as an inspiration to all who
    2-9  were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it
   2-10        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-11  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Reverend
   2-12  G. G. Grant and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
   2-13  family:  to his wife, Gracie Lee Grant; to his sister, Mrs. Burnett
   2-14  Brown; to his three brothers, William, J. D., and Charlie Grant; to
   2-15  his three sisters-in-law, Ruth, Stella, and Jean Grant; to his
   2-16  brother-in-law, John Granville; to his numerous nieces and nephews;
   2-17  and to the other members of his family; and, be it further
   2-18        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-19  prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
   2-20  House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
   2-21  the Reverend G. G. Grant.
