By: Haggerty H.R. No. 499 73R8059 SRD-F R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The recent death of E. C. "Ted" Houghton, on March 1-2 22, 1993, at the age of 62, has brought a great loss to the many 1-3 friends and relatives of this distinguished Texas businessman and 1-4 civic leader; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A native of El Paso, he was well known throughout 1-6 the community for his exceptional business acumen, which he 1-7 asserted early in his professional career working in the field of 1-8 marketing management with Farah Manufacturing and Price's 1-9 Creameries; and 1-10 WHEREAS, In 1974 Mr. Houghton embarked on a successful and 1-11 deeply rewarding association with MBank, now State National Bank, 1-12 as vice-president of marketing and sales and in 1975 became 1-13 vice-president of marketing and communications with the bank's 1-14 PanNational group; and 1-15 WHEREAS, The following year he was promoted to senior 1-16 vice-president of the bank's marketing and consumer services group 1-17 division and in 1979 was made executive vice-president of the 1-18 marketing services group, where he continued to serve until his 1-19 retirement in 1989; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Houghton 1-21 maintained close ties to the El Paso community and served capably 1-22 as director of the El Paso Chamber of Commerce, as director of the 1-23 El Paso Public Service Board, and as president of the Sun Bowl 1-24 Association; in addition, he was chairman of a number of civic and 2-1 community service organizations including the Daughters of Charity, 2-2 the Hotel Dieu Planning Council, and the Texas Society to Prevent 2-3 Blindness; and 2-4 WHEREAS, A man of boundless energies, he generously gave of 2-5 his time, talents, and energies to serve on the boards of a number 2-6 of other worthy community organizations, including Junior 2-7 Achievement of El Paso, El Dorados, the Rotary Club of El Paso, and 2-8 the United Way, to name but a few; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Mr. Houghton was a man of great vision who dedicated 2-10 much of his life to serving the needs of his community; though his 2-11 special presence will be missed by all who knew him, his spirit 2-12 will surely live on in the hearts and minds of the many people 2-13 whose lives were touched by this exceptional gentleman; now, 2-14 therefore, be it 2-15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-16 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of E. C. "Ted" Houghton 2-17 and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his 2-18 devoted wife, Marietta Houghton; to his four sons, E. C. "Ted" 2-19 Houghton, Jr., Malcolm Houghton, George Houghton, and Brian 2-20 Houghton; to his two daughters, Marcie Grey and Linda Houghton; to 2-21 his brother, George W. Houghton, Jr.; to his sister, Madeline Karr; 2-22 to his nine grandchildren; and to the other members of his family; 2-23 and, be it further 2-24 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared 2-25 for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of 2-26 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of E. C. 2-27 "Ted" Houghton.
