                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The many sightseers who visit historic Waco each
    1-2  year will soon be able to enjoy a tour of the Texas Sports Hall of
    1-3  Fame, which will celebrate its grand opening on April 16, 1993; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, The happy result of years of careful planning and
    1-5  hard work, the hall of fame brings together the Texas Tennis Museum
    1-6  and Hall of Fame, the Texas High School Halls of Fame, the Texas
    1-7  High School Coaches Association, the Texas Sports Writers
    1-8  Association, and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame Foundation in Dallas
    1-9  to celebrate the achievements of many of our state's finest
   1-10  athletes; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, The founder of the Texas Tennis Museum and Hall of
   1-12  Fame, Charlie McCleary, and Waco Mayor Bob Sheehy were particularly
   1-13  instrumental in the effort to establish this gallery of sports
   1-14  greats in Waco; the project also has received unwavering support
   1-15  from local business and governmental leaders, Baylor University,
   1-16  and the Waco community; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Located in the heart of the city's tourist and
   1-18  historical district along the scenic Brazos River, this exciting
   1-19  attraction is near a number of other popular Waco points of
   1-20  interest including the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Baylor
   1-21  University; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, The new hall of fame continues the proud tradition
   1-23  of the original Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Grand Prairie that
   1-24  opened in 1951 with the induction of baseball immortal Tris
    2-1  Speaker; this must-see destination for sports fans everywhere will
    2-2  soon boast 350 members representing the best in their respective
    2-3  sports after the next planned induction; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, The highlight of the grand opening festivities will
    2-5  be the dedication of the hall of fame's Tom Landry Theater, named
    2-6  for Dallas Cowboy coaching great Tom Landry; five other
    2-7  extraordinary Texas coaches and athletes--Darrell Royal, George
    2-8  Foreman, Harvey Penick, Grant Teaff, and Nolan Ryan--also will
    2-9  receive recognition in the near future with special tribute rooms
   2-10  in their honor; and
   2-11        WHEREAS, The many outstanding Texans who have gone on to
   2-12  achieve greatness in sports are truly deserving of a special hall
   2-13  of fame to honor their remarkable accomplishments; the exemplary
   2-14  efforts of all those involved in this worthwhile project truly
   2-15  merit legislative recognition for their fine contributions in this
   2-16  regard; now, therefore, be it
   2-17        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-18  Legislature hereby declare April 16, 1993, to be Texas Sports Hall
   2-19  of Fame Day in the Lone Star State and commend all of the
   2-20  individuals who have worked so diligently to make the grand opening
   2-21  of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame possible; and, be it further
   2-22        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-23  prepared for prominent display at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in
   2-24  Waco as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
   2-25  Representatives.
