No. 515 73R7657 WMS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Cecil Cooper has achieved outstanding success in the 1-2 sport of baseball, pursuing an athletic career that took him from 1-3 the playing fields of Brenham to stardom in the major leagues; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Playing first base for the Brenham High School Cubs, 1-5 Cecil Cooper led his team to district and bidistrict titles in the 1-6 1968 season; during that championship season, his only one with the 1-7 Cubs, he maintained a phenomenal .442 batting average; and 1-8 WHEREAS, His exceptional talents attracted the attention of 1-9 major league scouts, and at the conclusion of his high school 1-10 career he signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox; and 1-11 WHEREAS, This remarkable individual spent the first nine 1-12 years of his professional career with the Red Sox before moving to 1-13 the Milwaukee Brewers, and he maintained his superlative level of 1-14 play with that organization until his retirement 11 years later; 1-15 and 1-16 WHEREAS, Among the many well-deserved honors garnered by 1-17 Cecil Cooper during his baseball career were five appearances on 1-18 the American League All-Star Team between 1979 and 1985, and his 1-19 consistent fielding excellence earned him two consecutive Gold 1-20 Glove awards in 1979 and 1980; and 1-21 WHEREAS, This outstanding gentleman has been inducted into 1-22 the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame and also has been nominated to take 1-23 his place among the other legends of baseball at the National 1-24 Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown; and 2-1 WHEREAS, In honor of his inspirational record of achievement, 2-2 January 21, 1993, was designated Cecil Cooper Day in the Brenham 2-3 community, and ceremonies commemorating the occasion included the 2-4 presentation of proclamations, letters, and a vintage Brenham Cubs 2-5 baseball jersey; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Cecil Cooper has striven throughout his life to give 2-7 his utmost both on and off the baseball field, encouraging those 2-8 about him to realize their dreams, and it is indeed fitting that he 2-9 be given special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-11 Legislature hereby honor Cecil Cooper for his outstanding 2-12 achievements in the sport of baseball and extend to him sincere 2-13 wishes for continued success in the future; and, be it further 2-14 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-15 prepared for Cecil Cooper as an expression of high regard by the 2-16 Texas House of Representatives.
