R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The citizens of Milam County are indeed fortunate to
1-2 reside in an area with a rich heritage and abundant natural
1-3 resources, and they will soon pay tribute to the county's history
1-4 with the placement of a historical marker on the grounds of the
1-5 Milam County Courthouse in the county seat of Cameron; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Created in 1836 from the former municipality of
1-7 Milam, the county was named for Texas patriot Benjamin Rush Milam
1-8 and was one of the state's largest counties when it was formed; and
1-9 WHEREAS, Originally comprising one-sixth of the landed area
1-10 of Texas and encompassing 40,000 square miles from which 33
1-11 counties would be carved, the county today has an area of 1,019
1-12 square miles and is home to many historic sites such as Indian
1-13 battlegrounds, mission sites, and Fort Sullivan; and
1-14 WHEREAS, Each year, many residents of Texas as well as
1-15 visitors from other states travel to Milam County to enjoy the
1-16 wealth of recreational activities available, to participate in its
1-17 colorful festivals, or to browse through such popular attractions
1-18 as the Milam County Museum in the old jail at Cameron; and
1-19 WHEREAS, In the future, when sightseers tour the grounds of
1-20 the historic Milam County Courthouse and visit the statue of Ben
1-21 Milam, they also will be able to visit a Texas-shaped granite
1-22 marker on the courthouse square that will detail the county's
1-23 original boundaries and those that were formed from it; the marker
1-24 will indeed be a fitting commemoration of the unique role this fine
2-1 region has played in the development of this state; now, therefore,
2-2 be it
2-3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
2-4 Legislature hereby honor Milam County and join its citizens in
2-5 paying tribute to one of our state's finest counties; and, be it
2-6 further
2-7 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-8 prepared for Milam County as a commemoration of its achievement and
2-9 as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
2-10 Representatives.
