                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes special
    1-2  pleasure in honoring Ellen R. Cohen, former executive director of
    1-3  the Houston American Jewish Committee Chapter, on receiving the
    1-4  1993 Max H. Nathan Award from the American Jewish Committee; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Each year this highly prestigious award is given to
    1-6  an individual in the Southwest who exemplifies the finest
    1-7  traditions of the Jewish community and who has made outstanding
    1-8  contributions toward the betterment of human relations; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Truly deserving of this recognition, Ms. Cohen
   1-10  distinguished herself as a dynamic and inspiring leader, a skilled
   1-11  coalition builder, and a strong advocate for social justice issues
   1-12  during her 10-year tenure as executive director of the Houston
   1-13  American Jewish Committee Chapter; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, This extraordinary woman was the founder and
   1-15  president of Reach to Recovery in Canada and, since her arrival in
   1-16  Houston in 1979, has won acclaim for her work with Leadership
   1-17  Houston, the American Leadership Forum, the Houston Area Women's
   1-18  Center, the Texas Council on Family Violence, the Citizens Review
   1-19  Committee, and Congressman Mickey Leland's Kibbutz Internship
   1-20  Foundation; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Named the 1989 Houston Post and Texas Executive
   1-22  "Woman on the Move" and the Houston Women's Magazine "Woman to
   1-23  Watch in 1991," Ms. Cohen has garnered countless awards and honors
   1-24  for her civic leadership and contributions to the Houston
    2-1  community; last year she received the Leadership Houston
    2-2  Distinguished Alumnus Award and this year was named an Iris Siff
    2-3  Oral History Women of Achievement honoree; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, Exemplifying perseverance, hard work, and dedication
    2-5  to excellence, this vibrant civic leader has earned the respect and
    2-6  admiration to all who know her, and her many exceptional
    2-7  achievements are indeed worthy of special legislative recognition;
    2-8  now, therefore, be it
    2-9        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-10  Legislature hereby commend Ellen R. Cohen for receiving the
   2-11  American Jewish Committee's 1993 Max H. Nathan Award and for her
   2-12  many outstanding contributions to the people of Houston and the
   2-13  State of Texas; and, be it further
   2-14        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-15  prepared for Ms. Cohen as an expression of highest esteem by the
   2-16  Texas House of Representatives.
