H.R. No. 565 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The city of Floresville has lost one of its most 1-2 esteemed citizens with the passing of Mayor Roy G. Sanchez on March 1-3 6, 1993; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A native Texan, he was born in Floresville, the 1-5 sixth of 14 children born to Eugenio and Maria Sanchez; he remained 1-6 a lifelong resident of the community, where he raised his own 1-7 family of six children with his beloved wife, Pauline; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Mayor Sanchez was a dedicated civic leader who began 1-9 his distinguished tenure of public service when he was elected the 1-10 first Hispanic member of the school board of the Floresville 1-11 Independent School District in 1966; and 1-12 WHEREAS, While on the school board, Mr. Sanchez played a 1-13 pivotal role in increasing opportunities and promoting equality for 1-14 employees and students within the schools and worked diligently to 1-15 encourage a greater emphasis on academics within the district; and 1-16 WHEREAS, After 18 years of outstanding service on the school 1-17 board, this admirable gentleman was elected mayor of Floresville in 1-18 1984, in which capacity he made many significant contributions to 1-19 the betterment of his community; his procurement of more than $1 1-20 million in grants for the city resulted in numerous improvements 1-21 for the lower-income areas of town, including a new water system, 1-22 paved streets with curbs, and an underground drainage system; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Other worthwhile organizations with which he shared 1-24 his considerable insight and expertise over the years included the 2-1 Floresville LULAC, the GI Forum, the Little League, the scouting 2-2 movement, the Sacred Heart Parish, the Holy Name Society, and the 2-3 Knights of Columbus; and 2-4 WHEREAS, In all aspects of his life, Roy Sanchez demonstrated 2-5 unfailing optimism, integrity, and dedication to that which he knew 2-6 to be right; though his presence will be deeply missed, the memory 2-7 of this remarkable gentleman will continue to live on in the many 2-8 accomplishments he leaves behind; now, therefore, be it 2-9 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-10 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Mayor Roy G. Sanchez 2-11 and extend sincere sympathy to his wife, Pauline, to his six 2-12 children, and to the many friends and relatives of this fine man; 2-13 and, be it further 2-14 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-15 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 2-16 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-17 Mayor Roy G.
