R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Since the first organized football team appeared at
1-2 Texas A&M University in 1893, the Aggies have compiled a century's
1-3 proud record of 15 Southwest Conference titles and have appeared in
1-4 19 bowl games, giving the team an 18th ranking nationally in bowl
1-5 participation; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Athletics at Texas A&M University and throughout the
1-7 region came of age in 1914 when the Aggies created the post of
1-8 athletic director and hired William L. Driver, thus making football
1-9 an officially sponsored activity, and the area colleges organized
1-10 the Southwest Conference, setting the stage for serious
1-11 intercollegiate football competition; and
1-12 WHEREAS, The Texas Aggies boast 277 All-Southwest Conference
1-13 student athletes, 39 All-Americans, seven members of the National
1-14 Football Foundation Hall of Fame, and a Heisman award winner, John
1-15 David Crow, the current athletic director; and
1-16 WHEREAS, The Texas Aggies became the 1939 national champions
1-17 under Coach Homer Norton, whose 13-year tenure is the longest in
1-18 the school's history; and
1-19 WHEREAS, The 1992 team, with R. C. Slocum coaching, compiled
1-20 an enviable season record of 12 wins and no losses; and
1-21 WHEREAS, Aggie students, who in traditional "12th Man"
1-22 spirit, stand throughout their team's football games, are legendary
1-23 in their undying support of their team; and
2-1 WHEREAS, The world's largest bonfire burns brightly each fall
2-2 before the game with number one rival, Texas, giving the Aggies a
2-3 national reputation for enthusiasm and school spirit; now,
2-4 therefore, be it
2-5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd
2-6 Legislature of the State of Texas commends the Texas Aggie football
2-7 team for its outstanding record and for the honor it has brought to
2-8 Texas A&M University and to Texas; and, be it further
2-9 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
2-10 for Coach R. C. Slocum and for Texas A&M University as an
2-11 expression of high regard by the House of Representatives of the
2-12 State of Texas.
