H.R. No. 577 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The death of Charles Randall Griggs, Jr., of 1-2 Sweetwater on February 28, 1993, at the age of 73, has brought a 1-3 great loss to the many friends and relatives of this distinguished 1-4 West Texas attorney; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Griggs was born on October 7, 1-6 1919, in Stamford and was graduated from The University of Texas 1-7 and The University of Texas School of Law; and 1-8 WHEREAS, He was a patriotic man who dutifully came to the aid 1-9 of his country during World War II, serving as an armored infantry 1-10 commander and afterward contributing his legal knowledge as a judge 1-11 advocate with the War Crimes Branch, where his responsibilities 1-12 included the apprehension and extradition of war criminals; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Returning home, he began a highly successful Nolan 1-14 County legal career when he formed a partnership with his 1-15 associate, Charles Nunn, in 1947; over the years the firm underwent 1-16 mergers, and Mr. Griggs became senior partner of Nunn, Griggs, 1-17 Sheridan & Conrad, where he practiced until his death; and 1-18 WHEREAS, In addition to his outstanding career in private 1-19 practice, he distinguished himself during a 40-year career of 1-20 public service, representing the city of Sweetwater as city 1-21 attorney; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Throughout his noteworthy career, Mr. Griggs 1-23 contributed invaluable insight and knowledge as an esteemed member 1-24 of several professional organizations and was a fellow with the 2-1 American College of Trial Lawyers, the American Bar Foundation, and 2-2 the Texas Bar Foundation, which he also served as vice-chairman; 2-3 and 2-4 WHEREAS, In addition, he made many significant contributions 2-5 as president of the Sweetwater Bar Association, as a director of 2-6 the State Bar of Texas, and as a member of the Texas Judicial 2-7 Council; and 2-8 WHEREAS, He enjoyed a distinguished 32-year affiliation with 2-9 the United States Army Reserve, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 2-10 1979, and in recognition of his valorous wartime military service 2-11 was honored with burial in Arlington National Cemetery; and 2-12 WHEREAS, A member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 2-13 Mr. Griggs was a man of great devotion and vision who dedicated 2-14 much of his life to serving the needs of his community; though his 2-15 special presence will be missed by all who knew him, his spirit 2-16 will surely live on in the hearts and minds of the many people 2-17 whose lives were touched by this exceptional gentleman; now, 2-18 therefore, be it 2-19 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-20 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Charles Randall 2-21 Griggs, Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his 2-22 family: to his beloved wife of 47 years, Ingrid Bakken Griggs; to 2-23 his two sons, Eric Griggs and Charles Griggs; to his two daughters, 2-24 Isabelle Clift and Siri Jeffrey; to his five grandchildren; and to 2-25 the other members of his family; and, be it further 2-26 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-27 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 3-1 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 3-2 Charles Randall Griggs, Jr. 3-3 Charles Randall Griggs, Jr. 3-4 Counts 3-5 H.R.
