No. 590 73R9278 PFG-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Norman Johnson on January 8, 1993, at 1-2 the age of 74, has brought great sadness to the many friends of 1-3 this esteemed former business leader; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born October 18, 1918, on a farm in Kingfisher, 1-5 Oklahoma, to Walter B. and Nora Callison Johnson, he was a graduate 1-6 of Kingfisher High School and the University of Oklahoma, where he 1-7 majored in finance and business law; and 1-8 WHEREAS, A veteran of World War II, Mr. Johnson served his 1-9 country with distinction as a member of the United States Navy from 1-10 1942 to 1946 and participated courageously in the New Guinea and 1-11 Philippine campaigns; after the war, this patriotic gentleman 1-12 continued to serve his country in the U.S. Naval Reserve until 1-13 1954, when he was honorably discharged with the rank of lieutenant; 1-14 and 1-15 WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson pursued a successful career in the 1-16 banking industry in Oklahoma and Texas that spanned four decades 1-17 until his retirement in 1976 from the position of vice-president 1-18 and trust officer of the Bank of the Southwest in Houston; widely 1-19 regarded for his business acumen, he also served an accomplished 1-20 tenure as president of the Houston Corporate Fiduciaries 1-21 Association; and 1-22 WHEREAS, This remarkable gentleman also found time to share 1-23 his talents to benefit the members of his community as the director 1-24 of the Galveston Red Cross and the United Fund and as a valued 2-1 member of a number of worthwhile organizations, including the 2-2 Houston Chamber of Commerce, the Galveston Rotary, the Houston Day 2-3 Care Association, and the Boy Scouts of America; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Making his home in Bellville and Brenham after his 2-5 retirement, Mr. Johnson also was an avid traveler, and traversed 2-6 the countryside with his beloved dog, Honda, who was his constant 2-7 companion for the last 13 years; together the intrepid pair logged 2-8 more than 200,000 miles touring the United States on Mr. Johnson's 2-9 motorcycle and making many friends along the way; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Throughout his long and rewarding life, Norman 2-11 Johnson made many lasting contributions to his community and lived 2-12 each day to the fullest, adhering to a personal creed of 2-13 gentleness, courtesy, and Christian virtue; though he is gone from 2-14 us now, the memory of his generosity and good humor will endure as 2-15 an inspiration to all those who were privileged to know him; now, 2-16 therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-18 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Norman Johnson and 2-19 extend sincere sympathy to his cousin, Janet L. Utman, and to the 2-20 many people whose lives he touched during his years on this earth; 2-21 and, be it further 2-22 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-23 prepared for his loved ones and that when the Texas House of 2-24 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Norman 2-25 Johnson.
