                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The death of Dr. Leslie V. Hawkins on April 8, 1993,
    1-2  at the age of 79, has brought a great loss to the many friends and
    1-3  relatives of this distinguished Texas A&M University professor
    1-4  emeritus; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, A long-time resident of Texas, Dr. Hawkins was born
    1-6  January 24, 1914, in Canute, Oklahoma, and received his bachelor's
    1-7  degree from Panhandle State University before earning a master's
    1-8  degree from Oklahoma State University and a doctorate in education
    1-9  from Pennsylvania State University; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, He came to the aid of his country during World War
   1-11  II as a member of the United States Army and served three years in
   1-12  the Pacific Theater of the war; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Dr. Hawkins began his distinguished career as an
   1-14  educator in 1948 as an associate professor at his undergraduate
   1-15  alma mater, and in 1954 started his deeply rewarding 22-year
   1-16  association with the industrial education department at Texas A&M
   1-17  University; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, A leader in that field, he spearheaded efforts to
   1-19  create a doctoral program in industrial education at Texas A&M and
   1-20  played a key role in developing a driver and traffic safety
   1-21  education program and accident investigation classes; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Dr. Hawkins was widely respected throughout his
   1-23  chosen profession and contributed valuable insight as an esteemed
   1-24  member of several professional organizations, including the
    2-1  American Industrial Arts Association, the Texas Driver and Traffic
    2-2  Safety Association, Iota Lambda Sigma, Phi Delta Kappa, and the
    2-3  Texas Retired Teachers Association; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, In recognition of the many significant contributions
    2-5  he made throughout the years, Dr. Hawkins was honored with numerous
    2-6  accolades, including the Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award
    2-7  from the Association of Former Students at Texas A&M University;
    2-8  and
    2-9        WHEREAS, Throughout his distinguished career, he maintained
   2-10  close ties to his community and was an active member of A&M
   2-11  Methodist Church, Sul Ross Lodge, National Sojourners, the Scottish
   2-12  Rite, and the Kiwanis Club; Dr. Hawkins developed a keen interest
   2-13  in primitive woodworking tools and generously shared his extensive
   2-14  collection with many organizations and museums; and
   2-15        WHEREAS, Dr. Hawkins was a man of great vision who dedicated
   2-16  much of life to serving the needs of his community; though his
   2-17  special presence will be missed by all who knew him, his spirit
   2-18  will surely live on in the hearts and minds of the many people
   2-19  whose lives were touched by this exceptional gentleman; now,
   2-20  therefore, be it
   2-21        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-22  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Leslie V. Hawkins
   2-23  and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family:  to his
   2-24  beloved wife, Helen Sheets Hawkins; to his sister, Eunice
   2-25  Hutchinson; to his three brothers, Cleo Hawkins, Floyd Hawkins, and
   2-26  Ivan Hawkins; and to the many other members of his family; and, be
   2-27  it further
    3-1        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
    3-2  prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
    3-3  House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
    3-4  Dr. Leslie V. Hawkins.
