                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, Mario Moreno Reyes, better known as Cantinflas to
    1-2  audiences throughout the world, passed away on April 20, 1993, at
    1-3  the age of 81, and the loss of this marvelously talented
    1-4  entertainer has profoundly saddened the millions of people he had
    1-5  delighted with his incomparable comedic genius; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Mexico's most famous comic actor, Mario Moreno Reyes
    1-7  achieved worldwide renown in the form of his memorable creation,
    1-8  Cantinflas, and it was in this adopted persona that he will be
    1-9  forever remembered; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, In the great tradition of comic figures, the
   1-11  Cantinflas he portrayed was an endearing character, personifying a
   1-12  beleaguered and sometimes bumbling everyman who somehow managed to
   1-13  maintain his fundamental human dignity even as he was beset by
   1-14  outrageous fortune and calamity; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, So popular was this character that Mr. Reyes
   1-16  parlayed his creation into a highly successful screen career,
   1-17  playing essentially the same character in 48 films from 1936 until
   1-18  his retirement; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, His genius indeed was universally loved and admired,
   1-20  and none other than the great Charlie Chaplin once called him "the
   1-21  world's greatest comic"; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Like the good-hearted character he portrayed on
   1-23  screen, Mr. Reyes was in real life a generous and compassionate
   1-24  individual; having attained fame and fortune, he used his celebrity
    2-1  status as well as his time and energy to help those less fortunate,
    2-2  and he devoted much of his life to charitable causes, especially
    2-3  those that focused on the needs of the world's children; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, During a long and storied career, Mr. Reyes brought
    2-5  untold joy and laughter to the world, and though his death has
    2-6  saddened us temporarily, the smiles that inevitably return when we
    2-7  remember him at the height of his illustrious career and those
    2-8  happy memories he leaves us ultimately will be his greatest and
    2-9  most enduring legacy; now, therefore, be it
   2-10        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-11  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Mario Moreno
   2-12  "Cantinflas" Reyes and join the millions of people around the world
   2-13  who mourn the loss of one of the world's most beloved treasures.
