H.R. No. 617 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Lou Rogers has dedicated herself to the difficult 1-2 and demanding role of a hospice nurse, and her selfless efforts 1-3 have helped the Hospice of Brazos County in aiding hundreds of 1-4 terminally ill patients and their families; and 1-5 WHEREAS, For families facing the imminent loss of a loved one 1-6 and for terminally ill individuals coping with the dying process, 1-7 hospice programs are often a vital source of comfort, information, 1-8 and assistance; by providing home care, counseling, and respite 1-9 services for weary caregivers, a hospice allows individuals to 1-10 maintain their dignity and prepares the entire family for the 1-11 bereavement process; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Mrs. Rogers entered the nursing profession after 1-13 retiring from her career as an executive secretary for Shell Oil in 1-14 Houston; she had become interested in nursing while serving for 1-15 eight years as a volunteer at Texas Children's Hospital, and when 1-16 she and her husband moved from Houston to Brenham, she decided to 1-17 pursue her noble ambition; and 1-18 WHEREAS, With hard work, dedication, and the support of her 1-19 family, she graduated from the Blinn College nursing program in 1-20 1985, and, after earning the highest possible score on the state 1-21 nursing exam, her dream of becoming a licensed vocational nurse 1-22 became a reality; and 1-23 WHEREAS, She began her nursing career working in the surgery 1-24 department of St. Jude Hospital, and after serving as director of 2-1 nursing at Sweetbriar Nursing Home, this esteemed health care 2-2 professional returned to St. Jude Hospital, which is now part of 2-3 Trinity Medical Center; she became aware of the critical need for 2-4 hospice care after helping two friends who were dying of cancer, 2-5 and in 1991 she joined the staff of Hospice of Brazos County; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Throughout the many challenges she has faced in her 2-7 career, Mrs. Rogers has enjoyed the love and support of her 2-8 husband, E. M., and their three children; this tireless individual 2-9 also is a supporter of the American Cancer Society and a member of 2-10 First United Methodist Church, where she sings in the choir and 2-11 teaches Sunday school; and 2-12 WHEREAS, In times of crisis, people reach out to others for 2-13 support and strength, and as a hospice nurse, Mrs. Rogers is one of 2-14 the rare individuals prepared to answer that urgent call; with 2-15 courage, compassion, and faith, she has undertaken the admirable 2-16 but grueling task of easing the physical and emotional pain of 2-17 terminally ill patients and their families, and in doing so, she 2-18 and her colleagues have provided an invaluable service to the 2-19 people of Brazos County; now, therefore, be it 2-20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-21 Legislature hereby commend Lou Rogers for her many admirable 2-22 contributions to Hospice of Brazos County and extend to her warmest 2-23 best wishes for many more years of continued success; and, be it 2-24 further 2-25 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-26 forwarded to Lou Rogers as an expression of high regard by the 2-27 Texas House of Representatives. 3-1 Texas House of Representatives. 3-2 Kubiak 3-3 H.R.
